Asia Seed: an alternative art learning experiential programme catalysed by Asia culture

[Press Release]

Rooftop Institute present: Asia Seed Project Launch and Application Briefing

An alternative art learning experiential programme catalysed by Asia culture.

Art Connecting Hong Kong with Asia.

Asia Seed is the first art education programme supported by the “Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme” of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region since Rooftop Institute is established. This is a project combined with workshops involving an artist-in-residence and overseas art trip, targeted for the local youth aged from 14 to 18, and taking contemporary art to explore the possibility of an alternative art education. We are going to hold a Project Launch session on 5 November 2016, 3pm at Asia Society Hong Kong Center, and will introduce the detailed project mission and vision, application process and sharing the artist creation. Media is cordially invited to attend and cover the project.

Asia Seed is different from the exam-orientated art education in formal school, instead, we advocate an experiential learning of art, let the youth to relate themselves closer to art as well as by taking contemporary art as a catalyst to connect themselves with Asia’s modern history and its social and cultural issues.

We strongly believe that an artist’s long-term and accumulated experience on creation and research is the most direct and influential way to nourish one’s thinking, and to let more young people take a wider worldview to understand their relation with society. Thus, each cycle theme of Asia Seed project is based on an artist’s practice. Asia Seed intends to bring a new perspective on the region to the youth of Hong Kong in order to enrich their international vision with a broader perspective.

Moving images reconstruct the missing connection.

Entering the history through multiple ways

Chemistry between Hong Kong and Vietnam

Asia Seed programme consists of 4 cycles over a period of two years between 2016 and 2018. For Cycle 1, we invited Vietnamese Hanoi-based video and new media artist Nguyễn Trinh Thi and Hong Kong emerging artist Ocean, Leung Yu-tung to be the leading artists, working on the theme of “RE_HISTORY” to explore the relation between Vietnam and Hong Kong, and taking moving images as an art medium to connect us, where “Re” refers to the idea of “recording”, “reading”, “reacting”, “rethinking” and “retelling”. We invite the youngsters to use a way of “RE” to interpret such relation.

Asia Seed is financially supported by the Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
