Book Launch: Alternatives to Ritual – Exhibition as a Medium in China

The Department for Culture and Education (DCAE) of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai is delighted to announce the launch of the Alternatives to Ritual publications in Chinese and English/German

Alternatives to Ritual, both as an exhibition and a publication, attempts to look at the crises inexhibition making and curatorial practice by proposing a reconstruction of the relationshipsbetween artists, institution and curator through exploring the exhibition format.

Examining a number of artistic practices emerging in recent years that reflect on the ritual ofexhibiting presented throughout this exhibition, as well as through a number of commissioned texts.This publication proposes a new understanding of what an exhibition can constitute, as well as whatfunction curatorial practice in our current context should perform.

This book has been published in conjunction with the exhibition Alternatives to Ritual presentedby Goethe Open Space in Shanghai organized by the Department for Culture and Education of theConsulate General of Germany between September 2012 and March 2013.The Publications provides in depth examination of the works by Gao Mingyan, Hu Yun, Li Ran,Song Tan, Lu Pingyuan and Hu Xiangqian.

With contributions by: Nikita Yingqian Cai, Lu Jing, Shen Boliang, Su Wei, Yang Beichen,

Xiaoyu Weng and Biljana Ciric.

The English/German version of the publication is co-published by the Department for Culture and Education (DCAE) of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai andthe Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA), Manchester, UK while the Chinese version is published by the Department for Culture and Education (DCAE) of the General Consulate of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai and beebup publishing house
