Galerie Chantal Crousel

From October 22nd to December 19th, Chantal Crousel Gallery presents Danh Võ’s new exhibition entitled Take My Breath Away. This exhibition is his second solo show at the gallery after the launch in 2011 of his famous project “We The People”, a copper replica of the Statue of Liberty.

This year, Danh Võ was the focal point of many projects.

On the occasion of the 2015 Venice Biennale, Danh Võ invests the Danish Pavillion with the exhibition “Mothertongue” which is on view until November 22nd.

In the meantime, he was invited by François Pinault at the Punta della Dogana. Danh Võ co-curated the exhibition “Slip of the Tongue”, the artist’s reading of works in the François Pinault collection. This show, organized with the complicity of curator Caroline Bourgeois, is the fruit of a dialogue and friendly relationship between the artist and the collector. This exceptional exhibition not only reveals the works in the collection, but is also enlarged with works that have struck Danh Võ during his “insatiable” research into meanings and forms that reflect our world. The exhibition is on show until January 10th, 2016.

At the gallery, Danh Võ’s exhibition consists of new installations and sculptures. A fossilized mammoth jaw dialogues with an ivory letter opener. The visitor enters a mirrored room, engraved with quotes from the song “Fabulous Muscles” by Xiu Xiu, in which eleven photographs taken in Vietnam from 1962 to 1973 by Joseph M. Carrier are lined up. For the 10th Anniversary of the album “Fabulous Muscles” , Danh Võ realized a special edition of the vinyl cover: a cardboard onto which gold leaf was applied by his father, Phung Võ. Another sculpture made of a mammoth bone punctuates the exhibition.

Chantal Crousel, Niklas Svennung and their team celebrate this year the 35th Anniversary of the gallery.

Since it was established in 1980, Chantal Crousel Gallery has been unveiling the work of artists of highly diverse origin to the French and international art world of collectors and institutions. These artists share in common the exploration and a revelation of the essential values that underlie contemporary society. Each of them draws from their particular cultural heritage to develop their direction and a visual language that is both powerful and universal. The majority of these artists are now present in the most important collections.

Among the most significant moments of the gallery, we would mention the first solo exhibition in France of many major international artists such as Tony Cragg in 1980, Cindy Sherman in 1982, Gabriel Orozco, Mona Hatoum and Zang Peili in 1993, Hassan Khan and Allora & Calzadilla in 2004, Wang Bing in 2009, but also the only lifetime gallery show by Absalon in 1990, the first gallery solo exhibition by Anri Sala in 2001, the first solo show at the gallery by Jean-Luc Moulène in 2004 and by David Douard in 2015.
