Ink Studio, a program of Beijing Liangyou Huayi, is an experimental art space and gallery in Beijing’s Caochangdi art district devoted to exhibiting and promoting the most important contemporary ink artists in China to international collectors, curators, critics, and institutions. The gallery is looking for an energetic and well-organized person to work with gallery Directors, the Assistant Gallery Manager, and the Media Manager to strengthen the gallery’s presence in Chinese social media via Weibo, WeChat, and other online platforms; maintain relations with Chinese traditional media outlets; and liaise with events-related venues, vendors, and organizations.

Detailed Description:

Social Media Under the direction of the Media Manager, post content and track audience interaction on Chinese social media channels such as Weibo and Weixin to promote awareness of exhibitions, publications, performances, and other significant artist- or gallery-related events and drive traffic to the gallery website.

Traditional Media Coordination Under the direction of the Gallery Director, maintain the gallery’s press contacts and coordinate with Chinese media. Assemble and circulate press materials, including press releases, press kits, and images.

Coordinate and fulfill press related reproduction requests. Track press coverage, archive and format press clippings of various media (print, video, and online).

Events Coordination Under the direction of the Assistant Gallery Manager, organize and supervise gallery events and related external events, including openings, receptions, press conferences, academic lectures and conferences, concerts and performances, and gallery tours. Liaise with members of the press, caterers and vendors, venue managers, and events-planning and media production companies as needed.

Requirements:

• Honest and responsible, proactive at work, able to work collaboratively in groups.

• Detail-oriented and adept at multitasking.

• Good time management; able to complete tasks on time and under deadline.

• Keen interest and active participation in Chinese social media.

• Native or equivalent command of spoken and written Chinese; ability to produce effective social media content in Chinese is crucial.

• Basic facility with word processing and image manipulation software, such as Microsoft Office and Photoshop.

• Bachelor’s degree and work experience in a related field required.

The candidate should have a working knowledge and strong interest in contemporary art complimented by a background in social media, writing, and editing. It is crucial that the candidate assumes responsibility for a multitude of activities in a fast-paced environment with a constant eye on the big picture, while prioritizing responsibilities and carrying them out independently. The candidate ought to posses an extraordinary work ethic and willingness to join an extremely motivated, hardworking, focused, and visionary staff. Respectful teamwork is a must. Attention to detail and ability to follow through with projects are mandatory.

Remuneration:

• Five insurances and housing fund.

Ink Studio, a program of Beijing Liangyou Huayi, is an experimental art space and gallery in Beijing’s Caochangdi art district devoted to exhibiting and promoting the most important contemporary ink artists in China to international collectors, curators, critics, and institutions. The gallery is looking for a detail-oriented and well-organized person to assist in developing our authoritative research database to complement our expanding artistic program. This role requires working with gallery Artists, Directors, the Research Manager, the Assistant Gallery Manager, and the Media Manager to provide sufficient and relevant information related to Ink Studio artists for the purposes of publication, external programs, and media.

Detailed Description:

The tasks of researcher will be divided into two main streams:

A. Contemporary: Research Related to IS Artists:

  • Maintain an ongoing process of communication with artists, following an initial introduction, to gather information and images needed for the exhibition and publications. Materials to gather include but are not limited to:
  • Images of works to be included in the exhibition or otherwise consigned to Ink Studio, including information such as title, date of creation, medium, dimensions, photo credit, and exhibition history;
  • Other images that will be useful for publications or media use, including timelines and website listings;
  • Current CV and bibliography;
  • Any other publications, videos, etc. that are available.
  • Compile Chinese CV, bibliography, and timeline, based on information gathered from artist and other secondary information; and translate first drafts into English.
  • Research the artists assigned by Artistic Director.
  • Help compile a Research Guide under the direction of Artistic Director and supervision of Research Manager.
  • Continue updating Ink Studio artists’ materials after their exhibitions, including their CV’s and bibliographies.
  • Edit Chinese publications and, on an occasional basis, English publications.
  • Solve problems when editing publications, such as copyright issues.
  • Cooperate with other teams of Ink Studio to accomplish our aims.
  • Upload useful information to our internal server and update on regular basis.
  • Assist Assistant Gallery Manager and team to manage books, publications, and other printed materials for contemporary Chinese arts.
  • Business trips and other tasks.

B. Pre-Contemporary:

  • Research and editing:

Research will frequently involve filling in gaps in other writers’ essays, for example writing footnotes, finding sources for quotes, and arranging for use of images.

  • Edit essays and books.
  • Translate English essays into Chinese.
  • Keep in good contact with museums and publishing houses.
  • Record artworks by means of photographing.
  • Prepare for exhibitions and printing catalogs.
  • Manage books and printed materials on traditional and modern art.
  • Conduct business trips and other tasks.

Requirements:

  • B.A. in Art History or related majors; relevant work experience will be required.
  • Good demonstration of research skills (where to search; what new facts/knowledge to value).
  • Good demonstration of writing skills (how to knit information together to tell a fresh and compelling “story”; proper source citation; proper formatting).
  • Organizational skills.
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Word & Excel; Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Proficient in English.
  • Initiative, and ability to stay focused without constant supervision.
  • Desire and ability to stay up-to-date regarding research methods in the field.
