Position Managing Editor, Publications Program, Shanghai Project

ORGANIZATION

The Shanghai Project is an ideas platform bringing together—from China and abroad—artists, filmmakers, performers, musicians, designers, architects, writers, poets, philosophers, historians, scientists, economists, geographers, sociologists, anthropologists, journalists, doctors, lawyers, engineers, hackers, bloggers, activists . . . and the people of Shanghai. Together, we will think about and act on the sustainability of our futures in the 22nd century. Our ideas and methods will form the basis for exhibitions, performances, talks, and texts to be presented in various parts of Shanghai for 70 days from September 5 – November 13, 2016. PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

—Oversee and manage all aspects of producing the bilingual catalogue and post-project publication, including but not limited to gathering content from each department and contributors, overseeing editing, translation, layout, censorship review, printing, and distribution processes;

—Manage timelines and workloads of Publication editors, freelance writers, graphic designers and interns to ensure deadlines are met;

—Coordinate with other departments to gather information and issue writing assignments; Manage the process and communication with outside vendors in relation to the production of publications;

—Write, edit, and proofread in both English and Chinese content for all publications (print/digital). Writing will be done in part by managing editor, but primarily by the various departments. Managing editor role will be to ensure written content deadlines are met;

—Select, train, and manage interns and freelance writers, staying within the designated budget for all hired freelancers;

—Create and implement a production schedule and paginations in coordination with the graphic designer;

—Organize proofing process, ensuring all protocols and approvals are met;

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training:

The successful applicant will have proven project management experience; Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, translation (or other relevant/related degree or work experience).

Work Experience:

—Professional experience in copywriting, editing, or other communications work in China;

—Experience with and/or extensive knowledge of publishing process in China;

Skills and Abilities:

—Excellent written and reading command of English and Chinese;

—Able to motivate, train, and supervise staff and consultants;

—Able to take initiative, show good judgment, and manage projects from beginning to end;

—Excellent project management skills;

—Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills in Chinese and English;

—Able to manage details, multitask in a fast-paced environment, and meet deadlines;

—Familiarity with InDesign and other relevant software programs;

—Good sense of design;

—Must be available to work some evenings and weekends as needed.
