Position Production Manager—Exhibitions & Public Programs, Shanghai Project

ORGANIZATION
The Shanghai Project is an ideas platform bringing together—from China and abroad—artists, filmmakers, performers, musicians, designers, architects, writers, poets, philosophers, historians, scientists, economists, geographers, sociologists, anthropologists, journalists, doctors, lawyers, engineers, hackers, bloggers, activists . . . and the people of Shanghai. Together, we will think about and act on the sustainability of our futures in the 22nd century. Our ideas and methods will form the basis for exhibitions, performances, talks, and texts to be presented in various parts of Shanghai for 70 days from September 5 – November 13, 2016. This inaugural edition of Shanghai Project is organized by co-artistic directors Yongwoo Lee and Hans Ulrich Obrist.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
—Work with curators, researchers, architect, and exhibition designer to develop, organize and implement production of exhibitions, live events, and new commissions, within accepted standards of industry practice;
—Propose and manage production budgets;
—Create and manage production timelines, installation plans and schedules, ensuring that relevant staff are aware of deadlines;
—Negotiate, purchase/rent, and manage materials, equipment, and supplies; maintain relationships with key vendors;
—Ensure proper handling and display of loans; consult with lending institutions and individuals regarding methods of presentation for loaned objects;
—Supervise and assist with all construction necessary for the installation of exhibitions and event spaces; supervise and assist with maintenance of exhibitions and event spaces
Interface with designers and outside vendors for production of all event/exhibition signage and labels;
—Hire, train, and supervise personnel for all related needs, including preparation, packing, and shipping, construction, exhibition installation, lighting, and audio/visual support
Reports to Head of Exhibitions, works together with curatorial team
The successful applicant will have proven project management experience;
Bachelor’s degree in relevant/related field.
Work Experience:
—Proven experience as a production/project manager in museums or performing arts sector in China;
—Experience with art handling, transportation and knowledge of best practices;
—Experience with event/performing arts production, including technical theater;
—Experience monitoring budgets
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training:
—The successful applicant will have proven project management experience;
—Bachelor’s degree in relevant/related field.
Skills and Abilities:
—Excellent command of English and Chinese. Chinese as a native language is preferred;
—Able to motivate, train, and supervise staff and consultants;
—Familiarity with indoor and outdoor construction procedures in China;
—Superior project management skills, including budget administration;
—Able to manage details, prioritize, and multitask in a fast-paced environment, and meet deadlines;
—Able to think creatively, be resourceful and possess effective program solving skills;
—Familiarity with Illustrator, Sketch Up and other relevant software programs;
—Good sense of design;
—Must be available to work some evenings and weekends as needed.
