Galerie du Monde is proud to present 0-Viewpoint, a solo exhibition of Chinese artist Stella Zhang. Critically acclaimed for her multimedia art, Zhang engages with concepts of femininity, sexuality and the status quo in her practice. Commissioned for the occasion, Zhang will create an all-encompassing hand-sewn installation in the gallery space presented alongside a series of sculptural monochromatic paintings. The solo exhibition – 0-Viewpoint will run from March 13 – April 30 2015 at Galerie du Monde and March 13 – 16 at Art Central Hong Kong.

0-Viewpoint is part of a continuum in Zhang’s ongoing search for self, a process that the artist has termed “0”. This exploratory expedition of nationality, generation, gender and identity have been manifested in Zhang’s exceedingly reflective art, engendering her role and experiences as a female artist, born in China, who now works in Palo Alto, California.

The focal point of 0-Viewpoint, will be an expansive installation of fabric forming tunnels and canopies, alluding to the womb. Carefully hand-sewn, the constructions create spaces which are borderless and spiritual, whilst possessing simultaneous elements of being delicate and confrontational. Also exhibited are a series of white neo canvases. Presented as 2-dimensional paintings, manipulated fabric is cut and stretched across the wooden frames revealing the construction of its medium.

As a woman and a contemporary artist, Zhang creates overt references to female genitalia and symbolic phallic or reproductory forms in her practice. The recurring language references formal frameworks of patriarchy and sexual politics, however the dialogue extending beyond an exploration of the corporeal. Zhang’s works are nuanced with societal expectations, creating an ongoing tension and struggle. Returning to an examination of her self, the art represents a woman’s navigation between cultures and the dissonance between expectations and the inner self.

0-Viewpoint presents Zhang’s monochromatic, layered and internal landscape, one that is rich with emotions, unresolved tensions, impulses, conflicts and resistance. Embodied in her art, Zhang generously shares her most intimate, psychological and delicate self. She shares “0”.
