Pearl Lam Galleries participates in the 20th edition of ART TAIPEI 2013
Presenting works by Michael Chow aka Zhou Yinghua ~O-O~, Jenny Holzer, Jim Lambie, Li Huasheng, Jason Martin, Juju Sun, Tsang Kin-Wah, Michael Wilkinson, and Zhu Jinshi


Hong Kong—Pearl Lam Galleries is delighted to announce its participation in Art Taipei, exhibiting at stand B-01 from 8–11 November 2013. The stand will present a selection of key works by influential artists Jenny Holzer, Jim Lambie, Jason Martin, Michael Wilkinson, Li Huasheng, Zhu Jinshi, and Michael Chow aka Zhou Yinghua ~O-O~, which will be shown alongside emerging Chinese artists, including Juju Sun and Tsang Kin-Wah. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Art Taipei, the Galleries will also present a site-specific installation by British artist Jim Lambie in Public Area C.

The stand selection reflects Pearl Lam Galleries’ continued mission to foster cross-cultural dialogue and exchange between Asia and the rest of the world, and the Galleries’ long- established support for Asian art over the past twenty years.

Highlights include leading American artist Jenny Holzer’s new Chinese language LED works, selected to coincide with her first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, which recently opened at Pearl Lam Galleries. In a striking contrast to these LED pieces, the stand will also feature three thickly-layered oil paintings by Chinese abstract master Zhu Jinshi, a founding member of radical artists collective The Stars (Xing Xing), a group which presented the first-ever independent exhibition of contemporary art in China in 1979.

The stand presents some of Britain’s most celebrated contemporary artists showing in Taipei for the first time, including Jason Martin, who exploded onto the global visual arts scene as an active member of the ‘Young British Artists’ generation and came to the world’s attention in the ground-breaking show Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection in the 1990’s. Works from Martin’s Dictator series—almost sculptural paintings which manipulate thickly layered pure pigment on aluminium—will be exhibited alongside three important new works by Michael Wilkinson, a British artist currently participating in the major group show Art Under Attack: Histories of British Iconoclasm at Tate Britain, London.

A thought-provoking presentation of Chinese artists will also be exhibited at the stand, exploring a variety of traditional and new media, including a new silkscreen and acrylic work, ISHOPYOUSHOPHESHOP, by Tsang Kin-Wah, two ink on Xuan (rice) paper works by Li Huasheng, shown alongside Michael Chow aka Zhou Yinghua ~O-O~’s large-scale Homage to MB mixed media on canvas.

About Michael Chow aka Zhou Yinghua ~O-O~
Yinghua, born in Shanghai, China in 1939, is a time traveller. Son of the famed master of Beijing Opera, Zhou Xinfang, Yinghua was born into a family of theatre performers. He studied art and architecture at Saint Martins School of Art and the Hammersmith School of Art and Building (now the Chelsea School of Art), respectively. Precious metal is juxtaposed with trash in his mixed media pieces and forces the viewer to reassess preconceptions about what is precious and what is thrown away. His exhibitions include One-Man Exhibition (1962), Lincoln Gallery, London; and Three-Man Show (1964), ICA Gallery, London. His works are in numerous private collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

About Jenny Holzer
Jenny Holzer was born in Gallipolis, Ohio, USA in 1950. She lives and works in Hoosick, New York, USA. She is a Neo-Conceptualist artist, who utilises the homogeneous rhetoric of modern public information systems in order to address the politics of discourse through the medium of writing. Her solo exhibitions include Jenny Holzer (2004) at Kukje Gallery in Seoul, Jenny Holzer with poetry by Henri Cole (2004) at Galerie Yvon Lambert in Paris, Jenny Holzer (2003) at Mönchehaus Museum in Goslar, Germany, and Jenny Holzer (2001) at Cheim & Read in New York. She has also widely exhibited in prestigious museums and galleries in New York, Paris, Basel, Miami, Berlin, Oslo, and Rome. Holzer received the Leone d’Oro at the Venice Biennale in 1990 and the Public Art Network Award in 2004.

About Jim Lambie
Jim Lambie was born in 1964 in Glasgow, Scotland, and graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1994. He lives and works in Glasgow as a visual artist, musician and DJ. Lambie specialises in colourful sculptural installations made from everyday modern materials. His practice evolves from a response to the psychology of space and colour, and draws parallels with the concept of synesthesia. Lambie was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2005 for his Mental Oyster installation. His solo exhibitions include The Flowers of Romance (2013), Pearl Lam Galleries, Hong Kong; Shaved Ice (2012), The Modern Institute, Glasgow, UK; Spiritualized (2011), Anton Kern Gallery, New York, USA; and Jim Lambie (2006), Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C., USA. His work has been collected by the National Galleries of Scotland, Charles Riva Collection, Rubell Family Collection, Zabludowicz Collection, British Council, and Tate.

About Li Huasheng
Li Huasheng was born in Yibing, Sichuan province in 1944. Li studied in Chengdu under Chen Zizhuang and his early ink works followed in the line of traditional literati painting. In the mid- 1980s, the artist’s ink paintings were influenced by modern Western painting and he began to pursue a more subjective form of expression. Li’s method of creation is comparable to Zen meditation, where the brushstroke is a reflection of the soul. His solo exhibitions include Master Ten Cases in Chinese Contemporary Art (2010) at 800 Art Space in Shanghai, Li Huasheng: New Literati Paintings (2006) at Alisan Fine Arts in Hong Kong, and Li Huasheng: An Individualistic Artist (1998) at Chinese Culture Centre of San Francisco in California. He has also exhibited in museums and galleries in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Shenzhen, New York, Singapore and Taipei.

About Jason Martin
Martin, who was born in Jersey in the Channel Islands, takes inspiration from both Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism and the Western tradition of gestural painting. His distinct style received early recognition, exhibiting in London, Japan and Germany. In 1997, he was catapulted into the global visual arts scene through his participation in the groundbreaking exhibition Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection. His works have been widely seen in the USA and Europe in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, in 2009 and Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga in 2008. Martin’s works are in numerous private and public collections worldwide, such as the Government Art Collection, Great Britain; FNAC, France; the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; the Denver Art Museum; and Hirshhorn Museum, Washington D.C.

About Juju Sun
Juju Sun was born in Jiangxi, China in 1973. She studied at the Ottawa School of Art and under Optical Art Master Larry Poons at the Art Student’s League of New York and now lives and works in New York and Beijing. Her exhibitions include Dust from the Heart (2012) at Pearl Lam Galleries in Hong Kong, Solo Show (2012) at Today Art Museum in Beijing, Juju Sun Recent Paintings (2011) at Jawspace Gallery in New York, Not Afraid to be Beautiful: Juju Sun’s Recent Paintings (2010) at Gallery Gora in Montreal, and Pure Abstraction: Juju Sun (2007) at 8th Fl Artists Center at 481 Broadway in New York City.

About Tsang Kin-Wah
Tsang Kin-Wah was born in Shantou, China in 1976, and now lives and works in Hong Kong. He graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Camberwell College of Arts, the London Institute. Tsang’s solo exhibitions include MAM Project 015: Tsang Kin-Wah at Mori Art Museum (2011) and Tsang Kin-Wah at Yvon Lambert Gallery in Paris (2008) and New York (2007). He has also exhibited widely in group exhibitions, such as the Asian Art Biennial Taichung (2011), and Architecture of Fear at Z33 House for Contemporary Art, Hasselt, Belgium (2011). Tsang has also received numerous awards, including the Tokyo Type Directors Club Prize 2007, Sovereign Asian Art Prize 2005, and the Prize of Excellence at the Hong Kong Art Biennial 2001.

About Michael Wilkinson
Michael Wilkinson was born in Merseyside, UK in 1965 and currently lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland. His solo exhibitions include En Attendant (2013) at Pearl Lam Galleries, Shanghai; No History (2012) at Blum & Poe, LA; Never Works (2011) at Le Temple, Paris; Lions After Slumber (2009) at The Modern Institute/Toby Webster Ltd, Glasgow; and Wrong Gallery (2004), New York. Recent group exhibitions include Rubble Stir (2010) at The Glue Factory, Glasgow; Wayfinders (2006) at 135 Castlebank Street, Glasgow; and All That Is Solid Melts Into Air (2004) at FRAC des Pays de la Loire, Carquefou. His book 1979 was published in 2012 by Blackdog Publishing, London.

About Zhu Jinshi
Zhu Jinshi was born in Beijing, China in 1954. After completing an artist-in-residency in Germany and teaching in the Architecture Department of the Berlin Technical University, Zhu returned to Beijing, where he currently lives and works. He began painting abstract works in the late 1970s, and participated in the Stars (Xing Xing) group exhibition, the first avant-garde art show after the Cultural Revolution. Zhu has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions including Chinese Contemporary Abstract, 1980s until Present: MINDMAP (2012) at Pearl Lam Galleries, Hong Kong; Power and Jiangshan (2008) at Arario Gallery, Beijing; and On the Road (2002) at Prague City Museum, Czech Republic. Zhu’s work is represented in many private and public collections across the globe, including Canada where his rice paper installation The Tao of Xuan Paper (1997) is on permanent display at the Vancouver Art Gallery. In May 2013, to coincide with the first edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong, Zhu presented his first Hong Kong solo show at Pearl Lam Galleries. His work was also exhibited in Alone Together at the prestigious Rubell Family Collection in Miami until August 2013.

They are invited to push the boundaries of traditional Chinese art and craft techniques and create new works that reflect their experiences in China.
