Blindspot Gallery is delighted to present Hong Kong-born, New York-based artist Annysa Ng’s solo exhibition “Celestial Revolution”, this is Ng’s second solo exhibition at Blindspot Gallery since her first in 2011. The coming exhibition features Ng’s latest ink and acrylic paintings, as well as mixedmedia works.
Ng’s work often demonstrates a unique interaction with history, literature and psychology through remarkable technical expertise and iconic visual aesthetics. The featureless faces and the East-West costume on the silhouette figures in her painting have always been the trademarks of her art. With these faceless figures lacking any inferences of emotion, Ng explores topics of identity and reality as perceived through a state of sub-consciousness. In her new works, Ng attempts to extend the use of these figures to explore the mysteries of the natural world.
An ancient Chinese inspires the Celestial Revolution series constellation diagram that she came across by chance. Ng was enchanted by the graphical property and underlying meanings of the diagram, which suggest human’s intense desire and motivation to explore and to understand our destiny. In the paintings, the armillary sphere and terrestrial globe are placed amid or behind the featureless silhouette figures with the ancient Chinese diagram illustrating the celestial orbit of the five qi of the sky and 28 star mansions in the background. These celestial objects are the means invented to study the divinely unknown and destiny.
Her other new works titled Script and Conveyance are created based on traditional Chinese literature, also a major source of her inspiration. In Script, the artist quotes the Thousand Character Classic (千字文) written in the 6th century during the Liang Dynasty. The text is formed by 1000 unique words without repetition; it was generally used as an essential material to teach young children basic Chinese. The work reflects Ng’s profound understanding of the forces that underlie her approach, including cultural identity, artistic traditions and philosophical underpinnings.
Ng was selected by the Sunday Times in 2008 as one of the top ten contemporary artists to watch. Her works have been exhibited internationally at prestigious venues and art fairs including Egon Schiele Art Centrum in Czech Republic, Osaka Municipal Arts Museum in Japan, the 9th Chinese National Art Exhibition in Beijing, China, the SCOPE Basel in Switzerland and Asian Contemporary Art Fair in New York, USA.

About Annysa Ng
Annysa Ng was born in Hong Kong. She studied fine art at Staatliche Akademie der Bildenen Künste in Germany and School of Visual Arts in New York. Ng’s works have been exhibited internationally including Egon Schiele Art Centrum in Czech Republic, Osaka Municipal Arts Museum in Japan and SCOPE Basel in Switzerland. Her work is collected by Deutsche Bank, the Stuttgart City Library, Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Pacific Century Premium Development Ltd, Hong Kong. In 2008, she was named one of the top ten contemporary artists to watch by The Sunday Times. She currently lives and works in New York.
