Conrad Shawcross:Geometry of Mind
[Press Release]

Conrad ShawcrossGeometry of Mind is the artist’s debut in Asia. This solo exhibition will offer an opportunity by which the world renowned young artist is to meet Chinese public and share with them the fantastic world he creates.

Heralded by Limit of Everything, this exhibition is made up of the Installations of the objects and related sketches. The kinetic art crafts, surrounded by relevant sketches and combined with appropriate atmosphere, will create a tranquil space for contemplation.

In Conrad Shawcross’ installations, kinetic objects, combining with after images, creates either temporary space sketches or spiral movement. This gives a hint that time becomes an integral element of the art. Here the time is conceived not in the absolute sense, but coeval with the viewers as they stand in front of the works.

Much more characteristics are worthy of mentioning here. The space in which the artist’s works exist not only is the background, but it also comes to the fore and merges itself into the subject as such, and thereby a brand new sense of space comes into being. In the like manner, the artist combines the time with space, and produces new immersed space. Immersed space is not the cyber space made with precise scientific technology, rather, it is closer to the artistic cyber space formed in the viewers’ mental activities such as appreciation and speculation.

Rather than a space already completed in one’s sense experience, the artist is intending to show an immersed space depending upon viewers’ mental change. With immersed oneself into the art works, viewers may join with the art works and then have a new form of space.

The core of the exhibition is the attempt on the part of the artist to transcend the spatial bound. The art work involves itself with the dimension of time, combines the space in which it exists as such, and then produces a novel context finally. Through this technique, the viewers, apart from viewing the works, is enabled to be part of the work as such, and acquire a unique experience deriving from their interplay within the four dimensional space.
