Don Gallery is proud to launch HU Weiyi’s solo show ‘Daily Routine’ on January 5, 2017. The exhibition is a display of the artist’s achievements during his recent stay in Dufftown, Scotland for the Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Programme. Most of the works on show carry out the expectant trajectory of how the artist has conducted his life in the distillery, elaborating various forms, functions and structures that are reasoned from the found objects within and mundane scenes related.

However, the artist contrasts the physical space of everydayness where he takes time to observe with the mental space of virtuality where he touches upon the other end of ordinary living. As an effective attempt to demonstrate his substantial understanding on the neoliberal condition of contemporary life, the artist mainly articulates his individual participation in the designated site as a specific agenda suggesting the tolerance of labor and production at large.

Loosely organized though, the involved matters of repeated occurrence in the works are embracing subtle distinctions in accordance with the genuine clue of time and space. The intrinsic feature they may possess is the essential conflict between natural laws and human efforts, rendering the transfer of labor forces and the relocation of production relations in the process where the artist has himself established within the defined rule of capital expansion, yet performing his own private sphere of being socialized through a deliberate act of socializing.

The artist also inquires into the institutional knowledge of perspective in Chinese garden and landscape, infusing its dynamic quality with the theatrical atmosphere in many of his works. By processing perspective as an introspective experience of the material world, he makes up a calm narration of how different living details are accumulated to complete a chronicle which is parallel to one’s personal history. The substitution of co-referential expressions is registered as a major locus of the artist’s authoring language.

Hu Weiyi is a new media artist currently living and working in Shanghai. He graduated from the Department of Public Art and the School of Inter-media Art in China Academy of Art respectively in 2013 and 2016. He is good at observing the relationship between randomness and nature, and reversing it into a subjective expression. In 2014, Hu Weiyi won Huayu Youth Award for his work “Flirt”. His recent solo exhibitions include “Flirt” (M50 Art Space, Shanghai, China), “No Express” (UCCA, Beijng, 2015) and “Hu Weiyi” (Asia Art Center, Taipei, 2015). His works have also been featured in numerous group exhibitions, including “WE: A Community of Chinese Contemporary Artists” (Chi K11 Art Space, Shanghai, 2016), “True Landscapes and Landscaped Gardens” (Times Museum, Guangzhou, 2016), “Home Cinema” (OCT Art & Design Gallery, Shenzhen, 2016) and “Hinter jedem Berg steht noch ein Berg” (Helmhaus Z ürich, 2016).
