Dances on Their Own
Jason Wee
Richard Koh Fine Art

Richard Koh Fine Art (RKFA-KL) is pleased to announce Singapore-NewYork-based artist Jason Wee’s (b.1979) 3rd solo exhibition in Malaysia.Dances on Their Own is scheduled to run from 2 – 18 May 2019 at RichardKoh Fine Art, 229, Jalan Maarof, Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar 59000, KualaLumpur. The artist will present a set of 16 laminated C-Print on cardboardworks.

Dances on Their Own marks Wee’s return to the strategies of abstraction in landscape images,as well as the category of ‘the photographic’. Each of these images can be thought of ascomposites of every other image in the set and comprises both extreme close-ups andlandscape views. The artist follows queer bodies through an unspecified location in Singapore,as these individuals cross and re-cross the area looking for each other.

As indicated by critic Douglas Crimp, “Sex is everywhere for us, and everything we wanted toventure,” the driving compulsion and the ambition for the evening. The mode of abstractionin this body of works produces a visual move that covers the possibilities of this ‘everywhere’,moving from the immediacy at the image surface to the landscape at the far horizon, whileechoing the secrecy of their actions.

The body of works approaches the sociological in which strategies of self-presentation utilizedby members of a vocal minority in Singapore, who are still perceived to be at odds withconservative Asian values. At its core, the works could be considered a wider socio-politicalphenomenon that has forced upon concealment and camouflage tactics against unwantedgaze. Pieces of the puzzle jumbled, only decipherable by the ‘initiated’, and only fullyunderstood as a whole.

Richard Koh Fine Art has been in operation since 2005 and is regarded as a pioneer for introducing Asiancontemporary art to Malaysia and the region. Promoting an adventurous roster of emerging and establishedartists, the gallery regularly mounts exhibitions locally and abroad with a commitment to emerging practicesand challenging media.
