About Electronic Pacific
Many geopolitical and nationalistic identities evolved from aterrestrial understanding of cultural community, but today, due toglobal digital telecommunication, one could redraw cultural maps toconceptualize new border, connections and affinities. Forexample, dislocating the concept of East and West from itscolonialist legacy, one could redefine the West Coast of the UnitedStates as the East Coast of the Pacific Ocean and ascribe a newrelational understanding between the geographically linked peoplesof the Pacific Ocean. Emerging modes of communication canoperate in a supra-national modality to redefine cultural norms, and while perhaps this technology may only approximate the realexperience of in-person communication, the territory is ripe withpossible reinterpretation

In this exhibition, which was first exhibited at SOMArts CulturalCenter, we look to these Pacific-based artists to understand how wecan establish ourselves at the limits of transculturalcommunication and reframe the impact of shifting global economieson the shared space of language and identity. These artists fromaround the Pacific Rim expose and exploit new poetic spacesemerging at the jagged edges of communication, and speak aboutsupranational issues of translation and cultural distance in ahyper-connected and digitized world.
