Gallery 55 – Zhang Xiaowei – White Smoke
[Press Release]

Gallery 55 is proud to present artist Zhang Xiaowei’s solo exhibition “White Smoke” from the 15th of July through the 6th of August 2017.  The exhibition comprises representative canvas works by the artist created over the past three years.

Zhang Xiaowei’s art works are inspired by the narrative of memory.  He interweaves different fragments in the same picture to form mysterious metaphor. The organisational logic is related to his knowledge structure, which is composed of underground literature, Cult movies, and rock music of the 1990s; in addition to sub-culture sentencing and rhetoric to create scenery of abnormal feeling.

Many of Zhang Xiaowei’s recent works are connected to topics such as memory, travel and reading.  He believes that they all bear a kind of real-time spotting. His works are actually about feelings of hysteresis in the passage of time, and the confusion and doubts towards the original meaning of things.

Zhang Xiaowei was born in China in 1978.  He currently lives and works in Shanghai, China.  His recent major exhibitions include: “New World” (Museum @ Tongji University, Shanghai, China, 2017); “As We May Think” (Rule Gallery, Denver, U.S.A., 2017); “Reconcilable Hill” (solo, E Space, Shanghai, China, 2016); “Art Gallery of A Young Girl’s Heart” (Songzhuang Art Museum, Beijing, China, 2016); “Life Section” (J-Gallery, Shanghai, China, 2016); “Reading Pressure” (solo project, Ke Fang Art Space, Shanghai, China, 2015); Visible Light” (Nanjing New City Contemporary Art Centre, China, 2015); “Nanjing International Art Exhibition” (Nanjing International Exhibition Centre, China, 2015); “Poly Art Exhibition” (Poly Auction, Beijing, China, 2015); etc.
