In parallel with the exhibition ‘UGO RONDINONE : I GIORNO’ at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Almine Rech Gallery is pleased to present ‘GOD IS MAN MADE’, John Giorno’s fourth solo exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition will feature exclusively new works from his recent series ‘Rainbow Paintings’.
John Giorno was born in 1936 in New York. After graduating from Columbia University, Giorno moved to the Bowery in the mid-1960s where he joined a vibrant art scene. He quickly became close with Brion Gysin, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and Andy Warhol, featuring in the latter’s famous movie ‘Sleep’ (1963). At the crossroads between poetry, visual arts, music and performance, the work of this key figure of the American underground scene has been an influence on several generations of artists such as Elizabeth Peyton, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Pierre Huyghes and Ugo Rondinone.
From the beginning, Giorno aimed at opening up poetry to an audience wider than its usual public. He is considered to be the inventor of ‘Performance Poetry’, intense and vividly performed poetry readings in front of an audience, and of ‘Dial-A-Poem’ (1968), a free telephone line to connect listeners to recordings of poems, which was groundbreaking for using this type of communications technology. For several years he has also been creating what he calls ‘Poem Paintings’: works where typography and colors play an essential role, evoking both advertising slogans and buddhist mantras. Composed of sentences from his own writings, these works borrow from a variety of media: painting, drawing, watercolor and screen printing. Thus taken out of their purely literary context, poetic works such as these redefine the contours of our relationship with words and language.
The work of John Giorno has been presented at numerous institutions, including the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and the Flux Laboratory in Carouge, Switzerland (both 2015); during the opening exhibition of the Louis Vuitton Foundation, Paris (2014); at the art center Faux Movement in Metz (2012); Museum of Modern Art, New York (2012); and the Centre Pompidou, Paris (2008).
The exhibition UGO RONDINONE : I JOHN GIORNO takes place at the Palais de Tokyo until January 10, 2016. John Giorno will present three performances in the coming weeks: November 18th at the Palais de Tokyo as part of the Paris Autumn Festival; November 23rd at the Centre Pompidou-Metz; and November 25th at Maison Rouge Fondation Antoine de Galbert, Paris.
Parallèlement à l’exposition « UGO RONDINONE : I JOHN GIORNO » au Palais de Tokyo, la galerie Almine Rech a le plaisir de présenter « GOD IS MAN MADE », la quatrième exposition personnelle de John Giorno à la galerie. Cette exposition sera entièrement constituée de nouvelles peintures issues de la récente série des « Rainbow paintings ».
John Giorno est né en 1936, à New York. Après avoir étudié à l’Université de Columbia, Giorno s’installe dans le quartier de Bowery, dès le milieu des années 60, rejoignant ainsi la vibrante communauté artistique qui s’y déploie. Il devient rapidement proche de Brion Gysin, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg ou encore Andy Warhol dont il sera l’acteur du célèbre film “Sleep” (1963). À la croisée de la poésie, des arts visuels, de la musique et de la performance, l’œuvre de cette figure majeure de la scène underground américaine influencera ensuite plusieurs générations d’artistes tels qu’Elizabeth Peyton, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Pierre Huyghes et Ugo Rondinone.
Depuis ses débuts, Giorno s’est attaché à ouvrir le champ de la poésie à une audience plus large que son public traditionnel. Il est notamment l’inventeur de la “Performance Poetry”, lecture performative, vivante et intense, réalisée face au public ou encore de “Dial-A-Poem” (1968), une ligne téléphonique gratuite dédiée à l’écoute de poèmes, première oeuvre utilisant ce type de technologie de communication. Il crée également depuis plusieurs années ce qu’il nomme les “Poem Paintings” : des œuvres où la typographie et les couleurs jouent un rôle prépondérant, évoquant aussi bien les slogans publicitaires que les mantras bouddhistes. Ces oeuvres, composées de phrases issues de ses écrits, empruntent à des mediums variés : peinture, dessin, aquarelle ou encore sérigraphie. Ainsi sorties de leur contexte purement littéraire, ces oeuvres poétiques redéfinissent les contours de notre rapport à la parole et au langage.
Le travail de John Giorno a été présenté dans de nombreuses institutions, au Palais de Tokyo à Paris et au Flux Laboratory de Carouge en Suisse en 2015, lors de l’exposition d’ouverture de la Fondation Louis Vuitton à Paris en 2014, au centre d’art Faux Mouvement à Metz et au MoMA de New York en 2012 ou encore au Centre Pompidou à Paris en 2008.
L’exposition UGO RONDINONE : I JOHN GIORNO se tiendra au Palais de Tokyo jusqu’au 10 janvier 2016. John Giorno proposera prochainement trois performances : le 18 novembre, au Palais de Tokyo, en collaboration avec le Festival d’Automne à Paris, le 23 novembre au Centre Pompidou-Metz et le 25 novembre, à la Maison Rouge Fondation Antoine de Galbert.
