Liang Changsheng’s Bizarre World

Press Release

Red Gate Gallery is proud to present a new exhibition “Liang Changsheng’s Bizarre World“. This is Liang’s first solo exhibition at Red Gate Gallery, featuring his most representative paper cuts, line drawings and sculptures. This show will also include works which are fusion of digital output and line drawing prints, specially created by Liang for this show.

From his early “X-World” to the “Elysium World (He Le)” series, Liang Changsheng explored various mediums and methods such as paper cutting, sculpture and ink line drawing to construct his very own “World of the Bizarre”. He creates inconceivable monsters, griffins, half man-half beast wizards and establishes lineages among them. These goblins are not bound by the definitions of man, beasts and deities but instead stand between the good and the evil, the celestial and the hellish, while basking in freedom and merriness. We can virtually identify with them as our way of protesting against our mundane lives and in a way, these imaginary beings are mirror images of the artist and us, despite our inability to elude our earthly obligations. In this show, not only do we get to appreciate the artist’s all-rounded skill sets but also his attempt to cast folk art, Buddhist metaphors, contemporary landscape and various visual expressions into a “personal classic”, which can be interpreted as his quest for individual perfection.
