Limited Knowledge

Artist Yang Fudong initiated the Experimental Image Studio at China Academy of Art in September 2010. He curated “Limited Knowledge” in spring 2012 as an art creation project during a ten-day journey to Dunhuang, involving students of the Studio. The project took the form of walking, filming, discussing, and engaging in creation surrounded by the artistic ambiance of Dunhuang’s geo-historical culture and its famous grottoes.

“Limited Knowledge” is about extending the limit of freedom – just like the students learning about survival in the dry wilderness, and discovering themselves amidst limited choices. “Limited Knowledge” is also about extensive nighttime discussions on the journey, when each one explains his own pictures, videos, and thoughts. The project is like a miniaturized, utopian Dunhuang life on video, structured as a journey, rather than an artwork about Dunhuang.

“Limited Knowledge” is co-presented by the School of Intermedia Art (China Academy of Art) and the School of Creative Media, City U, as the first exchange programme between the two academies. We are honored to invite you to the vernissage on 14th March at 6pm, and join this group of young artists for discussion at 6:45 pm.

Special thanks to Hanart TZ Gallery, West Heavens Project, Dunhuang Academy and Dunhuang Culture Promotion Foundation for support.
