ONE ON TWO, TWO TO ONE Segregations
by David Polzin
[Press Release]

David Polzin is interested in the usage of architecture and object-design, its social function and the psychological effect they exercise on the individual and the collective cultural identity. Or as it is often said: “We first shape buildings and objects, but afterwards they shape us and our perception of reality.” In his oeuvre, David Polzin creates installations and inhabitable buildings. He also creates, assembles and alters objects in various forms. In addition, David Polzin is fascinated with using paper as a media.

His current show at Waldburger Wouters is the inaugural show for the new gallery space of Waldburger Wouters at Boulevard d’Anvers 49 in Brussels. But instead of using and presenting the new gallery space in a pompous way, David Polzin completely altered the space with major constructional interventions. Obviously, these interventions follow a structure and concept, but this should neither be discussed nor interpreted here in written, but has to be personally experienced by the visitor when walking through the large-scale installation. Further, within the installation, David Polzin shows a series of 72 works on paper, in which he is exploring the potential of drawing on paper by developing and testing a multitude of different styles, effects and drawing media. David Polzin also displays in the installation various furniture related to his ongoing series of “Furniture and Objects from Germany’s Post-imperial Era”.

David Polzin was born in 1982 in Hennigsdorf, Germany (at that time still “DDR”, German Democratic Republic). He studied at the KHB-Weissensee in Berlin and at the Bezalel Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Jerusalem, graduating in 2008. In 2010, David Polzin received the Juergen Ponto work grant. A grant by the Federal State of Berlin was awarded to him in 2016, when David Polzin was invited to a guest-professorship and a residence at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena/California. Amongst many other exhibition participations, David Polzin had a solo show at MMK Zollamt Frankfurt in 2013 and most recently parallel solo shows at the Heidelberger Stuhlmuseum and at the Heidelberger Kunstverein in 2016.
