PAINT(erly) Description
This exhibition flushes out the notion of the “painterly”- that inherent and seductive quality of paintings that has not only helped the tradition survive countless deaths but has often been hijacked by other diverse media. What is it about this process driven, drippy, handmade painted-ness that continues to entice, mesmerize, and confound viewers? How has this quality helped to make painting invincible to theoretical claims of its exhaustion, backwardness, and lack of relevance?

This exhibition attempts to frame the definition of ‘painterly’ on its own terms: through the tactile and evocative essence of materiality, how that essence has transcended the medium itself, and sometimes mocked as a cliché of artistic expression.

PAINT(erly) showcases disparate works from around the world that favor technique, materiality and process, often at the expense of narrative. It also profiles how the painterly has become an object of parody through works of conceptual art. The exhibition is comprised mostly of paintings but also includes work of video, performance, sculpture, and photography from established and promising young international artists.

Artists include:
Matthew Brandt, Monika Bravo, Fang Wei, Geng Yini, Howard Hodgkin, Jin Shan, Li Jinghu, Li Songsong, Liao Guohe, Michael Lin, Paul McCarthy, Aniwar Mehmet, Martin Murphy, Ouyang Chun, Roxy Paine, Qiu Xiaofei, Leslie Wayne, Zhang Enli, Zhao Gang, Zheng Chongbin, Zhu Jinshi.
