Pearl Lam Galleries is delighted to announce their participation in Art Stage Singapore, exhibiting at stand A8 from the 16th – 19th January 2014. The booth selection has been carefully chosen in dialogue with the opening exhibition of Pearl Lam Galleries’ fourth major space in Asia; launching 17th January 2014 in the Gillman Barracks, Singapore’s leading cultural center devoted to contemporary art.
The booth will present a selection of key works by influential artists from around the world, including Golnaz Fathi, Jenny Holzer, Jim Lambie, Jason Martin, Su Xiaobai and Zhu Jinshi.

Also on show will be new works by Michael Chow aka Zhou Yinghua ~O-O~, the renowned restauranteur – an artist who has returned to painting after more than 50 years, to present his first ever solo show – opening 13 January 2014 at Pearl Lam Galleries Hong Kong. Painting under the pseudonym of his Chinese name ‘Yinghua’ the artist will present a new series of large-scale mixed-media canvases heavy with precious metals including liquid silver and gold leaf, with paper currency fashioned onto canvases alongside trash, rubber gloves, cellophane, egg white and other diverse materials.

Further highlights will include works from American artist Jenny Holzer’s first ever LED text series created in Chinese, which recently debuted in Pearl Lam Galleries Hong Kong space, and impasto paintings by Zhu Jinshi, one of China’s most celebrated contemporary artists, who exploded onto the international art scene in the 1970s as a member of the ‘Stars’ (Xingxing) avant-garde artist group alongside Ai Weiwei and Ma Desheng.

The booth selection reflects Pearl Lam Galleries’ continued mission to foster cross- cultural dialogue and exchange between Asia and the rest of the world, and the Galleries’ long-established support for Chinese art over the past twenty years.

“Singapore is central to the momentum of South East Asia’s burgeoning art scene. By exhibiting at Art Stage as well as launching our fourth major exhibition space in the city, we are developing new platforms to showcase artists work – always looking to support them on the international stage.” – Pearl Lam, Founder of Pearl Lam Galleries

About Michael Chow aka Zhou Yinghua ~O-O~
Yinghua, born in Shanghai, China in 1939, is a time traveller. Son of the famed master of Beijing Opera, Zhou Xinfang, Yinghua was born into a family of theatre performers. He studied art and architecture at St Martins School of Art and the Hammersmith School of Art and Building (now the Chelsea School of Art), respectively. Precious metal is juxtaposed with trash in his mixed media pieces and forces the viewer to reassess preconceptions about what is precious and what is thrown away. His exhibitions include One-Man Exhibition (1962), Lincoln Gallery, London; and Three-Man Show (1964), ICA Gallery, London. His works are in numerous private collections including Museum of Modern Art, New York (MOMA).

Golnaz Fathi
Golnaz Fathi was born in Tehran, Iran in 1972. Her work is transnational both in conception and execution, as it incorporates her extensive training in traditional Iranian calligraphy, graphic design, painting, and autobiography. Her paintings carry traces of meaning that have no known coded alphabet. The strength of her work stems from the drive to express emotions that cannot be pinned down into words. She has also exhibited widely in galleries and museums in South Korea, New York, Geneva, Dubai, London, Tehran, Paris, Chicago, and Padova. Her work is part of the permanent collection of Brighton & Hove Museum, England; Carnegie Mellon University in Doha, Qatar; Islamic Art Museum, Malaysia; Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore; The British Museum, London; Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi, India; Farjam Collection, Dubai; and The Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi, India. She has also received numerous fellowships and grants, including resident scholarships to study at Fabrica (Treviso, Italy) and Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris, France).
