Catherine Melin, “Untitled No.4,” Charcoal on Paper, 56×76.5cm, 2013

Catherine Melin gets inspiration from urban space, uses works to tell human activities in the city. In 2012, she was invited to Chengdu, China, to get inspiration from such a changing space that with high-speed development and a ultimate urbanization, and created in her unique artistic language.

Catherine Melin has been to Chengdu for resident creation twice on April and August, 2012, each time she lived for one months. Everyday she accurately measure the city just like a professional gauger, to record the scenes, objects and facilities in photographies, videos and paintings. She is particularly interested in the construction of Chengdu Ring Road and Fourth Ring Road. In her view, these constructions represent the high-speed constructions emerging in various parts of China. These constructions make China look like in a different time dimension from the Western community. In order to explore the other major cities in China, she has also been to Chongqing and Shanghai for investigation. In this exhibition, Catherine Melin will show her journey in Chengdu, China in the way of installation, painting, photography and video. Video sound is produced by artist Bernard Pourrière, he has cooperated with Catherine Melin for many times.
