September 3 – October 3, 2015
LOCATION: Lehmann Maupin
407 Pedder Building
12 Pedder Street
Central, Hong Kong
SHORT DESCRIPTION:
Opening September 3, Lehmann Maupin Hong Kong will present the first solo exhibition in Asia of Matthias Weischer (b. 1973, Elte, West Germany), a famed contemporary painter of the Leipzig School. Considered one of the single most important contemporary German artists today, Weischer has gained critical acclaim for his participation in the Leipzig School: a movement linked to the modern revival of figurative painting.
The exhibition will feature a new series of works on canvas. Adept at creating believable worlds fused with the abstract, Weischer’s practice adapts through consistent experimentation. Serving as a continuation of his artistic practice and an extension of this experimentation, the paintings on view vacillate between figurative and nonfigurative representation, infusing empty interiors with subtle, abstracted references.
Weischer has participated in myriad solo exhibitions across Europe and the Americas, most recently at Tajan, Paris (2014), Gemeentemuseum, The Hague (2014) and Grimm Gallery, Amsterdam (2013). He has also participated in many group exhibitions, notably at Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Saatchi Gallery, London. The artist lives and works in Leipzig.
OPENING HOURS: Tuesday-Friday, 10am–7pm; Saturdays 11am-7pm
