Song Yige: Solo Exhibition 2012
Solo Exhibition by Song Yige
[Press Release]

[Pree Release]

ARTMIA Gallery is pleased to announce the opening on September 29 of Song Yige: Solo Exhibition 2012. Since Yige Solo Exhibition at ARTMIA in 2010, the artist has won wide acclaim for his use of oil painting to pursuit the relationship of the object and surrounding environment. ARTMIA will present her new works that created during the art residency program for Swatch in Peace Hotel in Shanghai.

Ordinary, simple and modest, objects in Song’s paintings appear to be things commonly seen in our daily life. However, they become something else in her works, something coming from our daily experiences yet striving for breakthroughs. From this perspective, her creation, being overemphasizing on certain aspects, is more like a process in which the painted objects are given a new life. Yet this is only what they appear to be as Song believes naming a painting is just part of her creation, which only relates to her memories of life and evaluation on her personal experiences and which is either the past or future, desperate or hopeful, chaotic or utopian. Song might want to create a new order about reality and truth, break all existing rules and strengthen her mindset of living at the moment.

As for the highly material description in her works, it is never a list of details. Instead, it is general or suggestive, indicating herself consciousness gained from her exploration of truths. With such self consciousness, Song doesn’t only emphasize the material aspects of her objects with a realistic painting technique, but also deliberately reveals the objects in a way that is similar to installation art. Installation art is one of the important creation ways in contemporary art. On one hand, it shows the material aspects of the finished work; on the other hand, it conceptualizes the reality. Clearly, Song’s presenting the objects as installations does not simply put them on canvas or aim to indicate exchanges among different ways of contemporary art creation. Still, it speaks out her understanding of the truths which are beyond the description of languages, any forms and projections.

The new body of works in this exhibition will present her growing understand of art creation as the reflection of self consciousness, either solitary or delusive are the process of achieving her sensation against the reality.
