“Trick or Treat” is an exhibition of post 80s artists who would like to search for a reason of making. As it was stated on the “Calling for Artists”, “the first elephant was created according to elephant image on book before I had seen any real elephants from reality. What pushed me to make?” This question becomes the initiative of the exhibition.
Growing up in and after 1980s, these artists were exposed to man-made images and videos. For this reason, many of us witness a lot of un-naturalistic and artificial imageries in the public and on mass media. This becomes the collective visual memory that gives the artist a very different foundation for their making. When the so-called creations (in a board definition) can be found everywhere and many of them are even well crafted, people would hardly be touched by the action of making or the final out-puts of the creators.
The Exhibition does not require any particular subject matters of artworks. Yet, the works need to be mediated by tangible objects. The size of works should not be bigger than 50x50x50 (cm). Finally, we have selected works from 50 artists from many applicants.
It is not hard to realize that most artists ‘ways of production is contradicting to the law of effectiveness. They are pulling making out from the existing labels such as “functional”, “communal” or “social”．.Jairus Yang, Sun Yitian, Li Lan and Zhao Xu who has produced mechanical and computer graphic like images by human hands regardless the high cost of Labor. The practice of ineffectiveness is continued by Lau Sanchia and Meg Wang whose fashion and jewelry design are barely wearable.
Huang Lan, Jin Jing, Zhu Kiki and Wong Rose have projected their personal emotion and memory onto handy and portable thingy. Qiu Shan and Qin Lingsen have documented the abstract time with trace on mundane objects. Their works only concern their own relationship with the making while it have nothing to do with the social and political big topics.
“Trick or Treat” which values the discussion on how making is valuable to the creators is quite different from many exhibitions that focus on the artworks and artistic value. We have no intention to conclusion any common qualities of human beings. Instead of it, we hope to present you a group of sincere artists who make maximum use of the 50 cm3 to start from scratch and search for their own answers to the questions.
