Variation

Fabrik is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by Vito Hung Fai entitled “Variation”.

Born in Hong Kong in 1988, Hung Fai has developed a deep interest in painting since childhood. Experimenting with both Chinese and Western media, he re-interpreted ‘Ink Art’ and developed a unique way of presenting techniques both in paper and canvas.

‘Variation – a plan of restoration’ features a series of work on paper, in which a variation of life was nurtured using water as ‘flesh’ and ink as ‘bones’. Hung Fai examines abstract organisms, to investigate the value embedded deeply in bodies and the possibilities of life. The series works are created based on the concept and language developed by the artist to record changes in life by restoring human form to the most primitive stage. The inspiration comes from penetration of x-rays through folding a surface (Chinese paper) multiple times where a three-dimensional ‘container’ is created. With the sensitive nature of Chinese paper and special techniques, ink injected penetrates, appears, duplicates and accumulates. The unfolded piece reveals chapters of transformation traces – a music score, notating the journey of bodies and the variation of life.

Since 2011, Vito has been awarded the Ting Yen Yung Award at The Art of CUHK and has received the Wucius Wong Modern Ink Painting Award at The Art of CUHK in 2012. His work was selected as one of the finalists of Hong Kong Young Artist Prize in 2012.
