Yu Ji Solo Exhibition Never Left Behind
[Press Release]

[Press Release]

opens Mar. 22nd, 2014 (Sat.) 16:00-18:00

Never Left Behind is the second solo exhibition of artist Yu Ji at C-Space. Together with her first solo exhibition I Stand Alone in 2011, two years apart and each presenting her understanding and attitude towards art, these two exhibitions reflect the thoughts and sediments in her practice in two different stages of her career. For this exhibition, Yu has worked as artist-in-residence in the gallery for over two months during which she has maintained a routine. The Stone in Flesh series will be presented in its entirety for the first time, together with other pieces produced during the artist’s residency will also be included in this exhibition.

Human torsos with blurry outlines and hazy colours, together with obscure forms shaped with soft wax and the apathetic collision between cement and rustic iron, Yu Ji has an obsession with a specific type of sculpture and use of materials, but is able to, at times purposefully while other times unintentionally, to connect to the complex and awkward situations we are in this day and age. Yu is always able to integrate the presence of labour work in her practice, as though stemmed from her value and inquisition in works produced both in the past and in the present. However, these are neither ideological nor moral judgments, though clearly they are basic values of which her artistic practice relies on. Yu’s sculptures embody her attitude towards the relationship between material and man, she continues with her admiration towards the tradition of manual labour, which has long lost its significance in artistic practices.

Never Left Behind opens on March 22 and will run through May 4, 2014.
