Sayaka Akiyama - “MOZU-NO-HAYANIE”

Reception
11 Aug, 17:00 – 20:00

Duration
2014.10.25 – 11.16

Joshibi Art Gallery
102, Building # 22, 50 Moganshan Road, Shanghai

Joshibi Art Gallery is hosting Sayaka Akiyama’s solo exhibition “MOZU-NO-HAYANIE”.

Sayaka Akiyama has to date always lived for a certain period of time in different places, and from there poured her actions, life experiences, and sensations towards things onto self-made paper or all manner of material found locally, which she then stitches and draws with local threads and other materials. Such sustainable art creation has won her great praise in Japan.

Nine years after 2005, this exhibition in Shanghai has the title “MOZU-NO-HAYANIE”. The exhibition brings together all the things encountered and done during a three-week stay in Shanghai, and has them drawn and stitched together within the space. From the opening of the exhibition, works will progressively be created, with changes everyday.

This process of creation will continue until November 8. The press conference on November 8 will also be the first press opening after the completion of the works in the exhibition space.

The works this time are expressed in angles that are different all the way to now. This allows us collectively to witness how the germ of artistic creation sprouts. We warmly welcome you all to Sayaka Akiyama’s first solo exhibition in China.

“MOZU-NO-HAYANIE”

The Bull-Headed Strike,

Every Fall,

Will wait for sharp objects on the tree branch,

To skewer prey, caught like insects.

The reason is known without trying,

It is still a mystery.

It must be to store something before hibernation,

Some people think that.

But lately, someone said

It could be an instinct.

Like how cats, even when full,

Will still catch mice———

No matter what, in the end,

This can only be a mystery

Joshibi Art Gallery

Joshibi Art Gallery is a gallery established in Shanghai by Japan’s Joshibi University of Art and Design. Focusing on Joshibi art graduates, the gallery is a space to present works by the next-generation of young artists as well as by the faculty of the university. The gallery was established in 2012, on the 40th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan.

China is a civilization that has grown and expanded by incorporating cultures from various regions and peoples. In such a plural and accepting context in China, the Joshibi University of Art and Design hopes not only to contribute to cultural exchanges between the two countries but also to gain a foothold in Shanghai, a major metropolis of culture and communications in East Asia, further developing artistic activities which can deepen ties with local residents.
