4A Launches Kickstarter Campaign to Bring Yangjiang Group to Australia

In an Australian first, Yangjiang Group is coming to Sydney to take over 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art. Yangjiang Group – Actions for Tomorrow will be presented in Sydney’s Chinatown during one of it’ s busiest periods during Chinese New Year celebrations in 2015.

4A’s campaign, launched on Friday, aims to raise $20,000 over 36 days to fund the project, drawing on supporters from Australia, Asia and internationally.

Through their unique brand of Chinese calligraphy and all-night binge brainstorming sessions that lead to wild ideas and spontaneous, strange and surreal happenings, Yangjiang Group explode the boundaries of traditional Chinese art forms to explore ideas of collective action and the ever-shifting dynamic of the individual in relation to the group. Actions for Tomorrow will include the commissioning of a major new installation at the 4A, as well as a one-night only participatory performance and garden party at the Chinese Garden of Friendship in Darling Harbour. For this commission 4A has offered the artists unrestricted access to the entire Centre with a challenge to not only integrate 4A’s administration areas into the artwork and to consider the history and location of Sydney’s Chinatown.

Yangjiang Group – Actions for Tomorrow was selected as one of only four non-profit arts projects to feature in the first wave on Art Basel’s newly launched curated page on Kickstarter. The money raised through this Kickstarter campaign will go towards the production of the artists’ work in Sydney. 4A needs support for materials to transform the 4A’s spaces and to facilitate the performances led by the artists.
