Last Call for BLAST!​

After the success of its first installment last September and an extended presentation of the open call at Asia Now in Paris and CaffeInternazionale in Palermo, Art In The City Special Project BLAST! will be on show once again during Art In The City Festival from September 9th to October 9th, 2016, at chi K11 art museum and other spots in the city.

Moreover, BLAST! 2016 will double, adding to BLAST! Visions, BLAST! Sounds: a larger platform for artists, creatives and free thinkers. A larger place for everyone to discover the emerging creativity of Asia.

​BLAST! is an open call, disseminated through a variety of platforms and social media. BLAST! Visions 2016 looks for moving images, animation, cartoons, computer-generated videos, interactivity and beyond. BLAST! Sounds 2016 seeks new music, including: acoustic, electronic, experimental, noise, pop, rock, found or environmental—anything goes.

A jury of professionals from the fields digital and contemporary art will select this year’s finalists. BLAST! Visions will be chaired by Davide Quadrio – Curator and Arthub Founder, in addition to aaajiao (XuWenkai) – New media artist; Roberto Gianstefani – Flatmind Co-Founder; Lisa Garrison –Lumen Prize Exhibition Director; Miltos Manetas – Painter, conceptual artist and theorist; Ying Shao – NOWNESS China Manager; and ShawayYeh – Modern Media Group Style Editorial Director.

For the premiere iteration of BLAST! Sounds the 2016 jury chair will be Massimo Torrigiani – Curator and editor, in addition to Ho Tzu Nyen – Artist, filmmaker and writer; Wok the Rock (WotoWibowo) – Artist, curator and cultural activist; Samson Young – Artist and composer; and Zhou Zihan – Performance and audiovisual artist.

This year’s winning submissions, which will include 8 optical and 8 sonic finalists, will premiere at Art In The City Festival, followed by presentations at exhibiting spaces across Shanghai. In addition to these locations, the video winners will be featured on NOWNESS and Arthub’s Screening Program – online platforms that provide temporary access to artists’ videos outside of physical venues. Additionally, the 8 sound finalists will have an opportunity to submit longer compositions, qualifying them for live performances at BLAST! openings this September.

BLAST! is organized by Art In The City in collaboration with Arthub, Flatmind, andK11.

Participants are asked to submit 1 HD videos with a maximum length of 30 seconds, 16:9 ratio and with no subject restriction (narrative or abstract).

Criteria for Submission

1) Video submissions may beno longer than 30 seconds;

2) Submissions must be in 16:9 HD format;

3) One entry (file upload) per applicant allowed;

4) Applicants must reside in Asia;

5) Applicants must be18y.o. at the date of submission or older;

6) For submissions to be accepted applicants must complete and sign the statement (http://blast.artinthecity.cn);

7) Submissions must be sent with the signed statement to blast.artinthecity@qq.com;

8) Deadline for entries: July 17th, 2016

​BLAST! Sounds

Participants are asked to submit 1 audio file with a minimum length of 30 seconds and a maximum length of 3 minutes, with no restrictions.

Criteria for Submission

1) Audio submissions must be between 30 seconds to 3 minutes long;

2) Submissions should be sent in a standard file format, including: mp3, wma, aac, or ogg;

3) One entry (file upload) per applicant allowed;

4) Applicants must reside in Asia;

5) Applicants must be 18 y.o. at the date of submission or older;

6) For submissions to be accepted applicants must complete and sign the statement (http://blast.artinthecity.cn);

7) Submissions must be sent with the signed statement to blast.artinthecity@qq.com;

8) Deadline for entries: July 17th, 2016

Please note that if selected, applicants will be asked to send the FLAC(uncompressed) versions of their sound pieces.

The finalists of BLAST! Visions and BLAST! Sounds will be presented at chi K11 and other venues during Art In The City Festival, from September to October 2016.

We will acknowledge the receipt of all applications. Shortlisted artists will be notified by August 25th, 2016. Regretfully we are unable to give individual feedback for unsuccessful applicants due to the high volume of submissions received.
