Museum MACAN to Open in November 2017

[Press Release]

Pop-up Performance and Lecture Series “MACAN First Sight” to Launch in March, Providing Opportunities to Preview the Museum

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (Museum MACAN) announced today that it will officially open to the public in Jakarta, Indonesia in November 2017. The opening will coincide with two of the region’s most anticipated contemporary art exhibitions—The Jakarta Biennale, which opens on November 4, and Biennale Jogja, which opens on November 2 in nearby Yogyakarta. In advance of its grand opening, Museum MACAN will launch MACAN First Sight, a series of pop-up weekend performances and lectures beginning in March 2017 that will provide the public with opportunities to preview the museum. Spearheaded by Museum MACAN’s Director, Aaron Seeto, MACAN First Sight will present performances by contemporary Indonesian and international artists, reflecting the diversity of the museum’s collection, as well as related lectures. Museum MACAN’s education program will also begin in March, including workshops with local teachers and schools in addition to the lecture series component of MACAN First Sight.

The date for Museum MACAN’s grand opening has been shifted from March 2017 to November 2017 following delays in the construction of the landmark multi-purpose building in which the museum will be located. Construction of Museum MACAN is at an advanced stage, and remaining work consists mainly of finishing touches to the interior, and ongoing tests to its systems. A prolonged preview, MACAN First Sight will present a series of special opportunities for audiences to become acquainted with the museum as it undergoes the final stage of its development. Each of the performances and lectures will be free of charge and open to the public. The program schedule and ticketing procedures will be confirmed next month, and participating artists and speakers will be announced shortly before each event.

“We look forward to welcoming the public for a sneak peek of Museum MACAN beginning in March, when we will launch a series of live performances by some of the most exciting contemporary artists working today, and provide opportunities for education with lectures by leading artists and scholars,” said Aaron Seeto. “MACAN First Sight will highlight the creativity of Indonesian artists and their international counterparts, and give our audiences an early taste of all that’s to come once the museum officially opens in November 2017.”

In addition to the live performances and lectures presented as part of MACAN First Sight, choice sculptures will be installed in the 500-square-meter (5,382-square-foot) indoor sculpture garden, which features a panorama over Jakarta’s skyline. The sculpture garden will be open to the public in tandem with the performance and lecture series, and guided tours will be offered on select weekend days in the lead up to the grand opening.

When Museum MACAN officially opens in November, the institution’s inaugural exhibition will bring together approximately 90 significant works drawn from Haryanto Adikoesoemo’s private collection of over 800 modern and contemporary artworks, collected over the past 25 years. Co-curated by Charles Esche and Agung Hujatnika, the exhibition will explore the collection through a disrupted chronology from the 19th century until today. The unfolding narrative originates in Indonesia and extends out to the rest of the world. Groups of work and individual presentations follow different thematics, geographies, and ideas along the way. Selections on view from the collection will include key works representing various art tendencies across Indonesia; important works of modern art from North America, China, Japan, Korea, and Europe; and a series of contemporary installations and new commissions by Indonesian and international artists. The collection displays will also include an archive and a suggested history of significant exhibitions and public presentations of art in Indonesia.

Additional details about the inaugural exhibition, programming, and grand opening events will be announced in the coming months.

About Museum MACAN
The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (Museum MACAN) will be the first institution of its kind in Indonesia, providing public access to a significant and growing collection of modern and contemporary art from Indonesia and around the world. Dedicated to supporting interdisciplinary education and cultural exchange, the institution will also offer a wide variety of public programs, and a dynamic exhibition program. As part of its mission, the museum will be an important platform for local and international artists to present their work to a global audience, and will commission new works by artists that broaden perspectives on contemporary art in and beyond Indonesia. Museum MACAN will also offer professional development opportunities for artists, curators, and other arts-focused young professionals to help build upon the energy of Indonesia’s vibrant arts ecology.

The Museum is scheduled to open in West Jakarta in November 2017, in a newly constructed 4,000-square-meter (43,000-square-foot) space designed by London-based firm Met Studio Design.
