Red Gate Residency: Two funded residency OPEN CALLS

We are thrilled to announce that Red Gate Residency has partnered with Yew Chung International School in Beijing, China and Kooshk Residency in Tehran, Iran to offer funded residencies.

OPEN CALL #1: Yew Chung International School artist-in-residence program in Beijing, China (October & November 2016). DEADLINE SOON: September 18, 2016.

In collaboration with Yew Chung International School, we invite proposals from visual artists interested in working with High School students in Beijing for the month of October and November 2016. This funded residency includes return flights, accommodation, material costs, as well as a per diem towards day-to-day costs.

Artist-in-Residence will be provided with a space on the school campus to use as a studio space. Project proposals that incorporate student participation are highly encouraged. Artist-in-Residence will also be expected to provide mentorship and studio critiques to IB diploma senior art students (8 students), give artist talks, workshops, and present a final exhibition/display. Past experience collaborating with youth or students is highly preferred.

Yew Chung International School artist-in-residence program covers:
Return flights (up to 1,000 USD)
Accommodation in Red Gate Residency downtown apartment
$850 USD per month stipend towards daily living costs
$750 USD minimum budget per month for materials costs. To YCIS discretion if artistic medium should require more.
Visa invitation letter and visa fees covered
Red Gate Residency program support (airport pick-up, Welcome Dinner, neighbourhood orientation, maps and directions, gallery tours, invitations to art openings and all Red Gate Gallery events).
Individuals from all nationalities are encouraged to apply with no restrictions based on age or medium. Project proposals will be evaluated based on their feasibility, creativity, and artist past experience working with students by a jury composed of Red Gate Residency and Yew Chung International School staff. Selected artist will also need to pass a background check since they will be working with high school students.

OPEN CALL #2: For Chinese and Iranian Artist. Residency Exchange program with Kooshk Residency in Tehran, Iran. DEADLINE: September 30, 2016.

Exchange Program (Iran – China)
1-31 December, 2016 – Tehran
1-29 March, 2017 – Beijing

Red Gate Gallery and Kooshk Residency present a new exchange program between Tehran and Beijing for one Chinese visual artist (or a collaborative duo) and one Iranian visual artist (or a collaborative duo). This exchange program exists out of two parts. The first part is held from 1-31 December 2016 in Tehran.

During a residency of one month, the Chinese artist has the opportunity to work in Tehran, Iran and collaborate with the Iranian artist. During these four weeks the space will be open to a local public of artists, students, and art critics. The program will end with a presentation or open studio.

The second part will be held from 1-29 March 2017 in Beijing, China. The Iranian artist(s) will have the opportunity to work in Beijing, China within our international residency community. During these four weeks, the artist will be introduced to the Chinese art scene, be invited to gallery openings and meet Chinese artists. The program will start with a presentation and end with an open studio.

The application is open for visual artists from China and Iran, interested in site-specific practices and the socio-cultural context of China and Iran. Applicants have to be interested in exchanging ideas and consider the participation in both parts of the projects. Applicants will be evaluated by a committee of the organizers mentioned above and will be informed by e-mail.

For the Iranian artist, accommodation and studio space for a period of one month in Beijing will be provided by Red Gate Gallery (a room for one or a duo). All the expenses for airfare, insurance, medical coverage for the duration of the program, any visa fee and the living expenses such as travel and food will be by the artist himself. Iranian artist is responsible for all required travel documents including visa and insurance.

Program for Chinese artist includes: accommodation (a room for one or a duo) and studio space for the period of their stay in Tehran that will be provided by Kooshk Residency.

Introduction to Red Gate Residency
Red Gate Residency is the longest-running International artist residency programs providing artists, curators, writers, and academics with the opportunity to live and create work in China.

Our objective is to provide facilities for artists to easily start their projects and offer a community in which they can participate as much as they like. Residents have a choice of living in downtown apartments or self-contained studio/lofts on the north side of Beijing.
