[press release]

In early September, Shanghai Center of Photography (SCoP) will present you seven leading photographers/publishers, home and abroad, in three excellent talks on professional photography books, on September 9 & 10.

Sep 9 “Steidl Book Award Asia” Book Launch.

At 14:00 p.m., together with DECK, Singapore’s pioneering container art space, SCoP will present you “Steidl Book Award Asia” Book Launch. Gerhard Steidl is famous for publishing the best photography books in the world. To promote professional publishing in Asia, he established the aforementioned award. Two of the winners, Woong Soak Teng  and Park Jong Woo Park will come with their award-winning books, Ways to Tie Trees  and DMZ: Demilitarized Zone of Korea, to share their stories.

Sep 10   Jiazazhi Publishing Program & The Making of Handmade Photobooks

At 10:30 a.m. will begin Jiazazhi Publishing Program (JZZP). Though literally meaning “fake magazine”, Jiazazhi is, in fact, a genuine and professional magazine publisher. Its founder Yan You will discuss with two photographers, Feng Li and Cheng Xinhao, about what kind of photography magazine we need today.

At 14:00 p.m., The Making of Handmade Photobooks will begin. Two photographers, Zhang Hai’er and Tang Jing will share their handmade books Zhang Hai’er : Photos and Brave New World. From their stories we will learn the indivisibility of hand-making form to the photographic content, or the raison d’être of handmade photobooks.
