One of the discoveries at Art Stage Singapore this year was Thai artist, Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew’s layered painting-on-silk installations shown by Singapore’s Yavuz Fine Art. The 3D visual effect of the transparent silk-curtain paintings is eerie; there is a sense of airlessness and nausea.

An elegant, thoughtful show curated by Nicolas Trembley, “Mingei are you here?” surveys and juxtaposes the local and international influence of the Japanese Mingei folk design movement, which was founded in 1926 following European arts & crafts movements, and continued into the 1970s… 

Dear Mr & Mrs Singapore: Your children, Art Stage and Biennale, have successfully completed the year and may enter the next class. Here is our report card. They are performing stronger but still have some work to do.
 

Art Stage art fair opened Wednesday and first impressions are good. The presentation is airy and sleek—definitely on a par with ArtBasel Hong Kong—and with some 130 exhibitors, there is certainly variety, perhaps sometimes too much.

I went for a walk and came across the National Art Gallery construction site (the gallery reopens next year). Building behind that looks like a spaceship is actually a spaceship from Planet North Korea.

Berlin Art Week, combining major museum openings, art berlin contemporary (an art fair), and a panoply of individual exhibitions, talks, happenings, lunches, parties and schmoozing, could be a wonderful thing.
