15 Invitations for 15 Years
A special programme series featuring exhibitions, projects, written works, performances, a blog, and publication marking Asia Art Archive’s 15-year anniversary.
For 15 Invitations, Hong Kong-based curator Inti Guerrero presents his research on the work of Filipino experimental musician and composer José Maceda (1917–2004). The exhibition includes archival and audiovisual materials on two of Maceda’s groundbreaking projects Ugnayan (1974) and Udlot-udlot (1975), which involved thousands of participants seizing public space and mass media during the years of martial law in the Philippines. Maceda’s work is placed in dialogue with video pieces, short films, and artefacts by Pio Abad, Anand Patwardhan, Jan Švankmajer, and Koki Tanaka to expand on collective creativity and social oppression found in the contradictory context of the arts during the Marcos regime.
Documentation on the 1972 large-scale sound performance Udlot-udlot can be found in AAA’s The Chabet Archive from which Guerrero sourced a selection of material for the exhibition. Notes and reflections on his research are recorded in AAA’s Field Notes blog, providing unique insight into his curatorial process.
A related talk will be held by Guerrero to discuss the conceptual work behind the exhibition at AAA. A tour of the exhibition in the library to follow.

A Space at AAA
Asia Art Archive is an independent non-profit organisation initiated in 2000 in response to the urgent need to document and make accessible the multiple recent histories of art in the region. With an international Board of Directors, an Advisory Board made up of noted scholars and curators, and an in-house research team, AAA has collated one of the most valuable collections of material on contemporary art in the region – open to the public free of charge and increasingly accessible from its website.
