David Zwirner is pleased to present an exhibition of Dada and Surrealist works on paper and photographs from the early to mid-twentieth century, on view at the gallery’s 34 East 69th Street location in New York. Organized by David Fleiss of the Paris-based Galerie 1900-2000, the exhibition will feature works by Hans Bellmer, Paul Citroen, Oscar Domínguez, Arshile Gorky, Wifredo Lam, René Magritte, Roberto Matta, Francis Picabia, and Man Ray, among other artists.

In 1972, Marcel Fleiss, together with Fred Fisher and Philippe Klein, opened Galerie des Quatre Mouvements at the encouragement of his friend Man Ray, whose rayograms were the subject of the gallery’s inaugural exhibition. In 1981, Fleiss launched Galerie 1900-2000 and has since organized more than 150 exhibitions devoted to major artists or rediscoveries and published more than 100 catalogues. These publications have come to be regarded as rare and important sources for scholarly research. In 1991, Marcel’s son David joined the gallery, developing its photography program and establishing links between historical and contemporary artists. Together, they devote themselves primarily to Surrealist paintings, drawings, and photographs, while also continuing to champion the art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
