China : Chinese, a visual explanation of life in China
[Press Release]

The exhibition was conceived in response to a common question, how do you find living in China? It is a question that gets asked by both locals and foreigners. It represents a personal as well as a general response, but perhaps it is impossible to find a definitive answer

So much that is experienced of China can be reduced to stories but often that does not capture the emotional response or the scale. Words, unless by a poet or writer fall short. The visual arts bring another perspective. This exhibition sets out illustrate the curator’s experience in China, through selected the works from the stockroom of Red Gate Gallery.

This exhibition by it’s nature is laid out to provoke a discussion/discourse, regarding what is China, what is Chinese, where are we going, what is our present, what is our future. He asks you to compare to your own journey, and does this interpretation convey a more general experience?

The exhibition utilises juxtaposition and sequence to create new meanings, yet the artist’s themes and concerns also resonate The curator had visited many of the artists in their studios and documented them making their work. Through this, their process, themes and lived experience began to be understood, and though this commonality is found.

This exhibition embodies the intersection between the artists and the curator as their paths cross in this magnificent and curious place, China. What will the viewer find?
