Dongdong CAI:Image Uterus Production Power
[Press Release]

Press Release

55 is pleased to announce that Dongdong CAI will present his recent photo works in his solo show entitled “IMAGE UTERUS PRODUCTION POWER”.

“What Dongdong CAI investigates, exposes, prompts or shares with others is the power discourse itself hidden behind viewing of human visual practice. In this sense, his photographic exploration to a large extent is ontic photography. The appropriation of art classic for him, in addition to show his personal rethinking of the classic, is also serious challenge of his own creativity and imagination. In respect to creation quantity, Dongdong CAI’s artworks are not rated as high yield, but the quality of his work is stable, solid, and goes deep into the core of questions he concerns, and he has obtained positive recognition. Such serious attitude is necessary but scarce in current Chinese contemporary photography creation.” – Zhen GU, art critic, independent curator.

Dongdong CAI was born in China in 1978. In 2002, he went to study at Beijing Film Academy. Dongdong CAI won Outstanding Photographer Creation Fund Award at Pingyao International Photography Festival in 2005; and 1st Prize at Italy’s 3rd Turner Modern Art Award in 2010. He took residency programme at UNIDEE Art Foundation in Italy in 2011. His recent major exhibitions include: “A Brief History of Chinese Contemporary Photography” (Beijing ShiShang Art Museum, 20120; “Tea Garden (solo, UNIDEE Art Foundation, Italy, 2011); 51sqm #6″ (solo project, Beijing Taikang Non-profit Art Space, 2010); “Re-viewing” (Guangzhou lnternational Photo Biennale, 2005).
