Guo Donglai believes the world we live in is an infinite space with border. The world doesn’t only exist in body or awareness. It exists in the “past”, “present” and “future” with an infinite, changeable form. There are clear boundaries between these three moments. They pull and squeeze each other within controllable range in a “parallel” way. The world we live in is formed between these moments of “pulls” and “squeezes”. Every object has its own domain. In every “self field”, there is a complete world. Guo Donglai uses different natural objects to represent every individual in the world. From the material composition point of view, each type of natural body is a combination of similar chemical elements. So from the outside, the appearance of similar object looks the same. But from the perspective of material ontology, its relationship with the world, the “past”, “present” and “future” is unique. Its “self field” is also an independent existence.

Guo Donglai “cuts” out “multidimensional” spaces with lines in the works of two-dimensional plane. Delineating the boundaries of different latitudes, placing each object in the “field” of its own to create an experience of dislocation of visual transformation. A vector links the relationship between man-made and natural, inside and outside of the work. The multidimensional spaces created by lines on canvas and the natural objects passing through them with a stone, a branch, or a black line, open the dialogue between objects and people in different states. Guo Donglai explores the relationship among material, world and space with a “visual rhetoric” approach.

Guo Donglai was born in China in 1985. He obtained his B.A. and M.A. from National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in 2008 and 2012 respectively. In 2015, he finished his studies at Luca Caccioni Studio of Visual Arts, Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna in Italy with a second M.A. Currently, he lives and works in Beijing.

Guo Donglai’s recent major exhibitions include: “A Thousand Miles” (solo, Galerie Liusa Wang, Paris, France, 2016); “En un clin d’œil” (solo, Galerie Liusa Wang, Paris, France, 2015); “Wall Power” (Today Art Museum, Beijing, China, 2017); “Wang Shikuo Award Exhibition of Nomination” (Today Art Museum, Beijing, China, 2016); “Young Artist Plus” (Songzhuang Contemporary Art Archive, Beijing, China, 2016); “Caissa Rising Arting” (Today Art Museum, Beijing, China, 2015); “New Star Art Festival” (Xi’An Art Museum, China, 2015); “Ivy Art” (Today Art Museum, Beijing, China, 2015); etc.

Guo Donglai does not limit himself within original or artificial or even industrial status of materials, but reconstructs new lingual and significant connections among different materials – discover unprecedented meaning during the process of changing material status and re-organization. Precisely speaking, he creates a magical match with natural materials and industrial materials; they look like being “apart”, while actually they are “generating new product”. In this way, he discards reunification, and exposes the discussion and fusion of materials’ “original status” and “artificial status”. The artworks of Guo Donglai present a rather remarkable art level; they not only dissolves the trace of “human” and “me”, but reactivates isolated objects through encounter of materials. To sum up, the artist blurs out the boarder between handcraft and nature, and shows an unprecedented existence and concept through reassembling materials. – Huang Du (independent curator / art critic)
