Magician Party and Dead Crow

Press Release

ShanghART Beijing has the honor of announcing that the solo exhibition of China contemporary artist Sun Xun Magician Party and Dead Crow will be opened on 29th Apr, 2013, which has lasted for almost three months since 30th Jan, 2013. As Sun’ s first residency project at home since 2008, this exhibition will present Sun’ s residency workplace in ShanghART Beijing openly and a space artwork blending with installations, paintings and three-dimentional animations will be finished during this exhibition. Basing on thoughts and experiences from previous space artworks, this exhibition is totally a new attempt.

Magician Party and Dead Crow bears in its title the legacy of SUN’ s contemplation on the system of his works and will be connected with Republic of Jing Bang at the upcoming solo exhibition in Project STPI Singapore. It marks a feature of SUN’ s work habit which builds the connection between and extension of all his art pieces and displays, unfolding the narrative of exhibitions.

Adopting a way of stage setting between that used in earlier movie studios and theaters, Magician Party and Dead Crow is mainly inspired and also limited by the specific site of the project. As the works are produced in the very space from a creation process full of possibilities and unknowns, imagination is released that magicians, as a paradoxical organization, is about to crash unconventionally into a string of fractured realities or fantasies.

SUN Xun was born in 1980 in Fuxin in Liaoning Province, China. He currently lives and works in Beijing. He graduated in 2005 from the Print-making Department of the China Academy of Fine Arts. In 2006 he established π Animation Studio. In 2010, 21G entered Venice Film Festival and SUN Xun received Taiwan Contemporary Art Link Young Art Award.
