Hauser & Wirth, a leading international gallery for contemporary art and modern masters, will open its Hong Kong outpost in the newly-developed H Queen’s complex on Monday 26 March 2018 with an exhibition of new paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Mark Bradford.

Bradford is one of the world’s most prominent and critically-acclaimed contemporary artists. His densely layered paintings and mixed media installations question America’s social landscape, politics and cultural history through a rigorous physical and material approach to the canvas.

This year Bradford was the representative for the United States at La Biennale di Venezia 57th International Art Exhibition. He has been much celebrated for his recent solo exhibition, ‘Pickett’s Charge,’ a monumental commissioned cyclorama of paintings at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. At 400 linear feet of wall space, the work is Bradford’s largest site-specific work to date. In 2015, Bradford presented ‘Tears of a Tree’ at Rockbund Museum in Shanghai.

The inaugural exhibition at Hauser & Wirth Hong Kong will span both floors of the gallery’s 10,000 sq ft space, extending across the 15th and 16th stories of H Queen’s, the purpose-built stacked gallery building designed by William Lim by CL3. Annabelle Selldorf, who has worked closely with Hauser & Wirth since 1996 and has overseen the architectural renovation of six of the gallery’s exhibition spaces internationally, has developed the gallery’s interiors.

The opening of Hauser & Wirth Hong Kong coincides with the week of Art Basel Hong Kong, in which the gallery will also participate.

Hauser & Wirth Hong Kong is co-directed by Vanessa Guo and Lihsin Tsai, the gallery’s Senior Directors responsible for activities in Asia.

About the Artist Mark Bradford was born in 1961 in Los Angeles, California, where he lives and works. In 1997 Bradford graduated with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts and Master’s of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California.

In 2015, Bradford was presented with the US State Department Medal of Arts. In 2013, he was elected as a National Academician by the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts in New York. Bradford is also a recipient of David C. Driskell Prize (2016); the McArthur Fellowship (2009); the Wexner Center Residency Award (2009) and the Bucksbaum Award, granted by The Whitney Museum of American Art (2006).
