Markus Lüpertz: Nicht Neues. Die Abstraktion hat noch nicht begonnen. 6 November 2015 – 7 February 2016
[Press Release]

Michael Werner Gallery is pleased to announce Nicht Neues. Die Abstraktion hat noch nicht begonnen, a solo exhibition by German artist Markus Lüpertz at the Bodemuseum in Berlin. The exhibition is the first of its kind at the celebrated museum, which houses the State’s sculpture collection: featuring sculptures and works on paper by Markus Lüpertz inspired by Ludwig Münstermann’s 17th century sculpture “Apollo”, it is a unique dialogue between the collection and Lüpertz’s work, balancing thematic classicism with formal expressiveness.

Markus Lüpertz is a great admirer of the art of past centuries – and besides, he is also quite enthusiastic about the Bode-Museum. During many hours in front of an early 17th century sculpture exhibited there, Ludwig Münstermann’s Apollo, he created a great number of drawings. The unique power of expression of this figure has time and again fascinated art enthusiasts and artists alike. Markus Lüpertz was particularly interested in the fact that this work of art combines thematic classicism with formal expressiveness.
The Bode Museum presents a selection of drawings by Markus Lüpertz, created up-close with the figure, in addition to a small selection of his bronze sculptures. For the first time since the reopening of the museum in 2006, two of the inner courtyards as well as the Monbijou bridge will be included in the exhibition.
