Open House: Black Space / White World
[Press Release]

Press release

ChART Contemporary collaborates with Meng Site for Open House: Black Space / White World, a series of curatorial experiments reflecting our mission of bringing together art and people. Join us and experience a new painting installation created by Meng Site and curated by ChART Contemporary.

Location: No. 190 Caochangdi (north of the Red Brick buildings) Phone: +86 182-0148-7807

The Open House series embodies ChART Contemporary’s mission of bringing together art & people through curatorial initiatives that educate, stimulate and support the production of new works by emerging artists. Open House presents new work for one afternoon in a space that is for rent, sale, abandoned or slated for demolition. There is no equivalent of the American concept Open House in Chinese, but the term yangbanjian conveys a similar feeling where real estate is on display for public consumption.

Open House is designed to give people an opportunity to interact with contemporary art beyond the black and white walls in a gallery or museum. Inspired by local real estate marketing tools that sell property based on showrooms, Open House is designed to reflect the living standards in China today and is inspired by the American marketing concept where doors are opened to the public for a Sunday afternoon and potential buyers are invited to visit a property. While the concept has different characteristics in each country, Open House has a commonality where anything is possible and the world is yours for the taking.

Meng Site was born in Shaoyang, Hunan province in 1988 and graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in 2011. Meng will receive his MA from CAFA in 2014. His work responds to the reality and loneliness of growing up as an only child in China. A rising star, his work has been acquired by leading collectors abroad and in China including artist Zeng Fanzhi. Meng Site has devoted two years to experimenting with painting techniques to create this installation, Open House: Black Space / White World.
