Intimacy, Mediated is an experimental project featuring works by artists Sunday Lai, Eric Tsang and Solomon Yu. Modern relationships are now a popular topic of discussion as new means of interaction develop and permeate our everyday culture. With the growing incorporation of new media into our lifestyle what is supposedly diminished is an organic interaction with our surroundings, as the application of these developments become standardized in a mass-produced environment, mediated by the limitations of the new objects and ideas in the market. Stemming from the questions of how we create, consume and relate to images in the digital age and how we position the personal in a consumer society, Intimacy, Mediated is an attempt to understand and leave an open question as to the transformations imposed on intimacy and its direction towards mediation.
Eric Tsang will be presenting a series of hand made cameras, adapted from Ikea furniture pieces; a project that emerged as a collaboration between the artist – a photographer, and his father – a carpenter. Tsang will be building on the mechanisms implemented within his Single and Twin Lens Cameras, continuing to explore questions of consumption, family and the language of objects.

Sunday Lai takes a playful approach to the modern market and our interaction with it. In her work “TV Peeking”, Lai intervenes with television screens displayed in various storefronts with a universal remote, expanding the intimacies associated with the home, in terms of objects we construct our daily lives with, now being restricted by popular ideals.
Solomon Yu’s appropriation of well circulated press photos strike a tone between sincere and ironic, or in the artist’s words, “ high hope and despair”. Yu choreographs these images into GIFs, which lend themselves to a repeated, re-experiencing of a particular moment in time, leaving us with a perverse sense of intimacy with such images and the events they depict.
About the Artists
Sunday Lai lives and works in Hong Kong. She works in a wide range of media, such as performance, video, installations and painting. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions such as, From 3G to 4G (Karin Weber Gallery, Hong Kong, 2014), [en]counters 2014: Is There Love in This Air? (Art Oxygen, C&G Artpartment, Mumbai, India, Hong Kong, 2014), Boing! (Osage Gallery, Hong Kong, 2013) and Inward Gazes: Documentaries of Chinese Performance Art 2012 (Macao Museum of Art, Macau, 2012). Her solo exhibition, Selling at the Daily Rental Shop, was in 2013. Lai has also participated in artist residency programs in India and Taiwan. She holds a BA (Hons) degree in Visual Arts from the Baptist University of Hong Kong.

Eric Tsang graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2014 with an MA in Fine Arts, Tsang lives and works as a photographer in Hong Kong. He has received multiple awards in Fine Art and in Photojournalism, including the Osage Art Award- Best in MA Show, 2014, Chu’s Academic Achievement Award 2014, The Cactus Prize 2014 and Focus at the Frontline awards from the Hong Kong Press Photographers Association in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012. Tsang’s works have been featured in exhibitions such as Allotropy (CUHK MAFA Graduate Exhibition, Hong Kong, 2014), and HKFOREWORD14 (10 Chancery Lane Gallery, Hong Kong, 2014).
Solomon Yu obtained a BA Fine Arts from RMIT, Australia, and in 2011 received his MA in Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Solomon is interested in exploring imagery as a medium for thinking and experience. He works with painting, digital imaging, video, audio and installations to create works in which viewers are invited as active participants. As an extension to his art practice, Solomon also collaborates with others and curates research-related art projects. He was an assistant curator in the curatorial team for Mobile M+: Yau Ma Tei (2012) presented by M+, HK’s new museum for visual culture, and he was a recipient of the Grant for Emerging Artists from HK Arts Development Council in 2013.
