Tang Yongxiang

In Tang Yongxiang’s work, objects and scenes are first captured unconsciously by camera, establishing a contingent relationship with the artist’s lived-experience. Without hierarchy, his paintings are suffused with fragments of scenes, gestures, body parts, objects and the shadowy absence of anonymous figures, which become internalised within an intimate web of relationships channelled through the artist’s painting. Seeking to attain an unfixed state beyond the directness of representation, his subjects circulate at a distance created by the untethering of an object from its context and entering them into a new logic.

Timur Si-Qin

Timur Si-Qin is a leading figure in a new generation of artists associated with the contemporary philosophical movements of ‘New Materialism’ and ‘Speculative Realism’. In Si-Qin’s recent work, commercial and stock photography feature prominently, as well as displays such as photographic light-boxes and x-banner advertisements like those often-found in commercial malls and stores. Si-Qin instead seeks to examine a broader question of why patterns and shapes reoccur so persistently – looking to understand how materiality and its tendencies define contemporary experience and structure our interaction within the world.
