TESS JARAY
Marlborough Fine Art, London
[Press Release]

We are delighted to announce Into light a new exhibition of the Austrian born, British based artist, Tess Jaray in collaboration with Karsten Schubert. For more than five decades, Jaray has been examining the geometry of pattern, repetition, and colour within her surroundings, including several public commissions since 1990. Her work is characterised by the enigmatic interaction of forms and colours. The patterns she creates suggest spatial ambiguities and shifting structures which work on the viewer’s perceptions in subtle ways. Jaray states on this new body of work, ‘My use of geometry has more to do with the relationships between people or things, rather than anything mathematical’.

Tess Jaray is one of Britain’s foremost painters and printmakers as well as being a writer, and the first woman to teach at the Slade. Jaray applies her interest in architectural space and pattern to her noted large-scale public commissions. These include a terrazzo pattern design for London Victoria station, and the forecourt for the new British Embassy in Moscow. She was made an Honorary Fellow of RIBA (Royal Institute for British Architects) in 1995 and a Royal Academician in 2010. Her work is inspired by Italian Renaissance architecture, and the way simple lines intersect and combine to create a transformative and evocative space.
