Marina Abramovic Makes Ad Art
First Jay Z, then Lady Gaga—and now the grandmama of performance art, Marina Abramović has stepped up to brighter pastures, making a short film / commercial with Adidas.
Apparently, the three-minute short restages Abramović’s “Work/Relation” (1978) “through the lens of the 2014 FIFA World Cup”. The original work had Abramović and Ulay, her partner, carrying stones back and forth in metal buckets. The Adidas video showed eleven people (a soccer team normally fields eleven players) carrying the stones in different ways—each with a bucket, two sharing buckets, or in a chain.
