Galerie Gisela Capitain was founded in 1986 and is focused on International Contemporary Art from the 1980s to the present.
Over the years the gallery has continually evolved its program and added established and emerging artists including the Polish artist Monika Sosnowska, the American artists Wade Guyton and Seth Price as well as the Scottish artist Karla Black and the English artist John Stezaker. Barbara Bloom, Kelley Walker and Luke Fowler joined the gallery program in the last years, followed by Marcel Odenbach and Richard Smith. In 2015 Austrian artist Tobias Pils, New York based painter Jacqueline Humphries have been added to the gallery program as well as Hong Kong based composer and sound artist Samson Young. The Japanese artist Hiroki Tsukuda joined the gallery program in 2016. The most recent addition to the program is the Peruvian artist Ximena Garrido-Lecca who is represented by the gallery since 2017.
In addition Galerie Gisela Capitain extends the gallery program regularly with curated exhibitions such as “Sgrafo vs. Fat Lava”, “Ceramics and Porcelains made in West Germany, 1960-1980″ or “Katsuhiro Yamaguchi – Jikken Kobo/Experimental Workshop”. A selection of Indian Ledger Drawings was shown in May 2016.
Galerie Gisela Capitain is the exclusive worldwide representative of The Estate of Martin Kippenberger since 1997.
In October 2008 Gisela Capitain has opened a new, 1300 square meter space in a 1960s glass pavilion in Berlin in collaboration with Friedrich Petzel Gallery, New York, to continue and extend the gallery‘s program of exhibitions and projects.
