Kasmin, 509 West 27th Street, New York

Founded in SoHo in 1989, Paul Kasmin Gallery cultivates a program in which the historic figures of Post-War and American Modernism are in meaningful dialogue with the evolving practice of both emerging and established contemporary artists.

The gallery represents and advocates for the legacy of such estates as Constantin Brancusi, William N. Copley, Max Ernst, Simon Hantaï, Jane Freilicher and Robert Motherwell. It has developed the careers of and continues to represent significant contemporary artists such as Walton Ford, Robert Indiana, Iván Navarro, Les Lalanne and Roxy Paine.

We are delighted to announce that, in October 2018, Kasmin will open its fourth Chelsea location featuring a column-free exhibition space, 28 skylights, and a rooftop sculpture garden situated alongside the High Line in the heart of Chelsea, offering a rotating outdoor sculpture exhibition program to the promenade’s 6 million annual visitors.

“The new gallery is the result of many years of discussion,” said founder Paul Kasmin. “Nearly all galleries in Chelsea are adapted industrial spaces, so the real ambition has been to create a purpose-built exhibition space with the sole intention of showing art at its very best and bringing the shows outside of the gallery walls.”

One of the few purpose-built commercial gallery spaces in Chelsea, the new building’s unique roof, designed to exhibit monumental works of sculpture, will put the gallery’s program on view to the High Line’s 6 million visitors per year. Signaling a new era of curatorial ambition, this new building will open with a solo exhibition of new paintings by Walton Ford in the gallery and an installation of three bronze sculptures by Joel Shapiro on the rooftop on Wednesday, October 10, 2018.

The gallery has been designed by studioMDA to realize the most ambitious aspects of Kasmin’s mission, particularly the exhibition of large-scale work. The roof garden provides an additional 5,000 square feet of outdoor exhibition space and its embedded skylights provide natural daylight into the art space below as well as evening illumination. The building is cast entirely in white concrete that bears the texture of brushed oak, creating a striking texture evocative of a wooden structure.

Paul Kasmin and studioMDA, led by Markus Dochantschi, have a long history of collaboration, having worked together to build the 515 W 27th St and 297 Tenth Ave gallery spaces as well as numerous exhibitions and art fair booths.
