The 35th edition of Art Brussels took place from 21 – 23 April and presented 145 galleries from 28 different countries. This is the second time the fair is located at Tour & Taxis, a vast former customs warehouse in the northern part of Brussels that was built at the turn of the 20th century when Belgium was rich off the back of its colonial exploitation of central Africa.

Reports on the art market are suddenly very hip. The art market is still such a tiny little thing compared with other markets, like pork bellies or copper, but a sufficient number of investment bank clients are involved in it to make the analysis worthwhile. The trouble is that most reports are rubbish, with a few exceptions.

Art Central is a big tent in many ways besides the obvious. The art and the galleries are an eclectic mix, frequently more focussed on design, kitsch and decoration than engaging the competitive collecting of Art Basel acolytes and the art intelligentsia (real or pretentious).
