象征自由、浪漫、男子气概和轻率鲁莽的汽车是美国人生活中必不可少的东西，它被看作是物主地位与身份的外在延伸。嬉皮士的艺术汽车、中美洲劳动阶级移民（Chicano）的低底盘汽车、“快活恶作剧者”梦幻般的校车以及摩托车党都称加尼福尼亚为家——尤其是在全年气候宜人的洛杉矶，公共交通工具几乎是不存在的，而高速公路的网络延伸至都市丛林的每个角落。
此次在亚当·林德曼（Adam Lindemann）的画廊VENUS中举办的展览是向洛杉矶市及其根深蒂固的汽车文化致敬。艺术家既把汽车当作主体也把其当作客体，进而测试它们与绘画和雕塑的关系，即艺术作品与日常用品的关系，以及调查男人对汽车之迷恋的社会政治尺度。从理查德·普林斯（Richard Prince）黑色的大功率高速中型汽车到斯特林·鲁比（Sterling Ruby）巨大的公共汽车（内部安装了监禁的笼子以及后部一个用超低音音箱及铝合金组成的房间），到马修·戴·杰克逊（Matthew Day Jackson）定制的特级赛车，如同理查德·普林斯曾注意到的“作品之中存在大量延伸而至的青少年时期。”他进一步提出，“像美国道奇Challenger和Charger的汽车存在于如《火速狂飙》和《警网铁金刚》这类电影之中。我不认为丹尼斯·霍珀（Dennis Hopper）在《蓝丝绒》中驾驶一辆69型号的Charger是巧合。”（1）
但是在这场有趣的展览中，不是所有的汽车都意在展现男性之魂和社会压力。流行文化同样作用其中。凯瑟琳·伯恩哈特（Catherine Bernhardt）在布鲁克林的工作室位于前身为汽车展销店的地方，她为一辆1994年的捷豹XJ6添入了热带风情，而肯尼·沙弗 （Kenny Scharf）用可爱的粉色笑脸鲨鱼“炮制（karbombz）”（karbombz是沙弗为喷绘汽车而发明的行业术语）了1975年的庞蒂亚克Gran Ville敞篷车，并以令人愉快的雏菊和水晶花朵装饰了它的车轮。
